Gimme Shelter from Bruno Mars

Nostalgic Music Month Day 23

Rolling Stones by Jon Hilton

The Rolling Stones have been rocking for decades and the fact that they are older than my parents and still doing it is a credit to them, their music and the effect it has on millions of people. I am one of those millions of people because at certain times of my life the soundtrack was punctuated by the music of The Stones.  The catalog of music is so large that there is something for everyone. Choosing the specific songs was a difficult task but I managed to break the list out to correspond with my life. The Rolling Stones have done alright. I mean, they’re no Bruno Mars but they have done alright.

  1. Gimme Shelter– There is going to be a time in all lives when they feel under siege. When we are indeed in need of shelter from the storm that is entering our lives. In times of stress, it is natural to pull back into yourself. These are the times that friends and loved ones can pull you through. When you listen to this song you can feel the turmoil of the years that it was written in. War, fire, and flood are all mentioned as threats we face. In the end, the cure is love. That is the real story of this song. When I hear this song, I think of a winter day, the snow is just starting to fall, but the storm is coming.  Oh, a storm is threat’ning, My very life today. If I don’t get some shelter. Oh yeah, I’m gonna fade away.
  2. Sympathy for the Devil– I have always been fascinated with the lies of life that people tell. I was raised as a Christian but was constantly faced with the hypocrisy of the institution.  I learned that God is love as long as you fit into the very strict categories the church approves of. It didn’t take long for me to recognize the evil that exists in separating people into groups. Pleased to meet you, hope you guessed my name.  I have learned that all people without exception are capable of great good and great evil, depending on circumstance and issues of self-preservation.  We can only choose where we fall on that chart through the decisions we make and the actions we take. Just as every cop is a criminal, And all the sinners saints, As heads is tails, Just call me Lucifer. ‘Cause I’m in need of some restraint.
  3. You Can’t Always Get What You Want– Regret is an emotion that we would be better off living without. But it is still going to rise up from time to time. It is only a thought and a fantastical one at that. The love you lost, the job you should have taken, the financial decision you should have made are all just creations of your mind.  Regret is a waste of time because no matter where your life would have been if you did things differently, your life now is all you have. So focus on that and make it the best you can. Feel the regret, acknowledge it, let it go and move on. You never know what is going to be ultimately good for you in the long run. Often times the things we want, are not the best for our long-term health and success.  I saw her today at the reception. In her glass was a bleeding man
She was practiced at the art of deception. Well, I could tell by her blood-stained hands. You can’t always get what you want. But if you try sometimes you just might find, You just might find, You get what you need.
  4. Paint It Black– Everyone at some point has felt this way because of the loss and suffering in their life. When love or something else is taken from you, your whole world can seem black.  All relationships will cause some degree of suffering, so you need to make sure that you are in a relationship with someone who is worth suffering for.  Until then you can go through life wanting to paint things black, black as night. I see a line of cars and they’re all painted black. With flowers and my love both never to come back. I see people turn their heads and quickly look away. Like a newborn baby, it just happens every day.
  5. Memory Motel– I have spent a lot of time at the Memory Motel in my life. The funny thing about memories is that we can color them any way we want. The value and emotions that we feel about them are supplied by our own thoughts. Two people can look at the same memory and have two distinct reactions to the same thing. Our minds are intricate tools, but they are only tools of thought. Memories are bittersweet. They allow you to visit events that happened long ago and see people that you haven’t seen in years. This song always brings back those memories of loves lost and things I could have done better, but in the end, it probably has worked out for the best. Hannah baby was a honey of a girl, Her eyes were hazel
And her teeth were slightly curved, She took my guitar and she began to play, She sang a song to me, Stuck right in my brain, You’re just a memory of a love That used to be. You’re just a memory of a love That used to mean so much to me.

Wild Horses, Angie, Satisfaction, Brown Sugar, Jumpin’ Jack Flash, Beast of Burden, Start Me Up, Tumblin’ Dice, Let’s Spend the Night Together, She’s a Rainbow, Ruby Tuesday, Waiting on a Friend, Under My Thumb, Midnight Rambler, Get Off of My Cloud, Fool to Cry

Bruno Mars by Mike Martin

In 2012, Madelyn was 4 and thought Google was her grandfather.  Today, I am tired because I stayed up late watching the Patriots finally play a little defense. So, today I am going to pretend that I have all the time in the world to be lazy.

The Lazy Song

Today I don’t feel like doing anything
I just wanna lay in my bed
Don’t feel like picking up my phone
So leave a message at the tone
‘Cause today I swear I’m not doing anything

Allow Abundance in Life

There seem to be two different mindsets people have when it comes to abundance.  Either you believe there is enough of everything or you are worried there is not enough for everyone.  Each of these mentalities leads to a certain experience in your life one of plenty or one of lack.  We seem to experience in life, exactly what we believe in.  The law of abundance states that there is more than enough in the Universe and nothing is limited.  This is a very difficult concept for many to accept because we see perceived lack all around us every day.  But that is only a perception, the reality is yet to be discovered and lies deep in your attitude and beliefs.  How you choose to view things is going to dictate your feelings about abundance.

The Law of Abundance– There is more than enough in the Universe, nothing is limited.

Money is Our Issue

In today’s world, money is the energy that makes things go.  We look at collecting as much money as possible to provide relief, happiness, and freedom.  But so much of how we view money depends on what we were taught and experienced as children. Your attitude about abundance starts right there in your youth.  We learn our basic beliefs from our parents, relatives, society, peers, and others we have contact with when we are young.  These ideas will be formed by the time we are 10 years old and many of the beliefs we accumulate come from there.

As soon as you believe money is an issue for you, panic and/or fear that you won’t have enough run your life and no matter how much you have, there will be a fear that it is not going to be enough.  Money becomes the focus of everything rather than on what you really want. Most want freedom, time, travel, experiences, etc.  These things are not money, although it is perceived that we would be free to do all we desire if money wasn’t an issue.  But we are the ones who make it an issue.  Our attitude dictates our success with and around money.

Abundance and Joy

It is common sense to look at someone who has done what you want to do and emulate them. But when it comes to abundance and happiness, you need to learn to blaze your own trail.  If you do what someone else is doing simply to make money it probably won’t provide both success and joy.  Joy comes from within when we are pursuing our purpose in life.  Whatever that is to you.  Follow your desire and the money will follow.  Most who hear this statement immediately list a lot of reasons this couldn’t possibly work for them.  My favorite is “You can’t eat your purpose.”

When you approach something from that perspective, with a list of reasons you will fail, then most often you are going to fail. That is just too much negative energy to overcome from within yourself.  If you don’t believe in yourself and give your dreams a chance, nobody else is going to.  There is enough in the world to go around. Be grateful for what you have, truly in your heart and more will follow.

Abundance and Lack

Lack seems to be a man-made commodity. The world creates plenty of food, enough to feed everyone, but it isn’t distributed to others because we have a man-made system of commerce.  Food has a value and if that value isn’t paid there is a fear the system will fall down. So the fear of not getting all they can causes lack.  Greed causes lack.  As people look out for themselves and accumulate way more than they could ever need.  This selfishness leads to lack because many feel that other people are not their problem.

This could all be changed if as a collective human race we decided that all lives were of value. Not just a select few. The fact is that they are and it doesn’t matter where they are from, what version of God they worship, the color of their skin, or their age, we are all the same and have a value.  Abundance will come when we see the most valuable commodity in the world is the people. All people. Be Grateful for what you already have and more will follow. Money, love, freedom, creativity or whatever it is you want.

Abundance Mindset

To allow abundance into our lives we need to have the right mindset. That mindset is that anything is possible. Know what you want and believe that it is possible for you.  Not just in the realm of money but in all areas of your life. Want abundance in relationships? Believe that it can happen to you.  One of the most talked about forces behind abundance is the practice of giving.  To give freely without the thought of return increases your personal energy and takes away the feelings of desperation and fear that repel things from your life.

Look at your personal beliefs about having money, being rich, or just being successful.  Take steps to take any negative, limiting beliefs you are entertaining.  Your beliefs about the world dictate the reality you experience.  Building positive thoughts, emotions, words, and actions about having abundance in your life will bring it into your life. Stop listening to negative messages about yourself and recognize that you can achieve what you want. The abundance of money, relationships, and experiences can come your way.

“Prosperity is a way of living and thinking, and not just money or things. Poverty is a way of living and thinking, and not just a lack of money or things.” –Eric Lutterworth

“To open to The Law of Abundance, we must be willing to become aware of where we focus our attention and what we believe to be true.” – Jennifer O’Neill

“Wealth flows from energy and ideas.” –William Feather

Letting Go

burningFire is an element that represents many things to many different people. To me, it has a symbol of purification. This is because when I looked into the fire, I saw the future ahead of me and the past was left behind.

The Significance of the Fire

There needs to be a bit more explanation than that I suppose.  In life, there are people who come into your life and cause only a ripple in the large tangle of life’s experience. Then there are those that are destined to leave a deep emotional crater, that you are destined to carry in your life.  How much and how long you carry it is up to you.

I started the fire for purification purposes. It needed to be done, a weeding out of cluttered possessions that served no purpose other than to remind me of things that were gone. As long as I held these things, there was the hope in the back of my mind that they would somehow summon those ghosts from the deathly slumber of their existence. It was time for a funeral, it was time for purification.

A Picture is Worth…………….

fire footage
Pictures burned as memories drift into the sky, never to be seen again.

The pyre I started was solely for me to observe and as the preparatory flames burned I said a silent goodbye and started to cleanse my existence of those memories. It was the pictures that went first.  Each happy moment of fake smiles and skin deep beauty were at first singed and then ever so slowly erased from existence.  As they went all of the lies, jealousy and foolishness went with them. Watching them go one by one was fascinating. Playing back entire years of events.  Then wiping them and their cursed impact away.  As the last fake image of yesterday disappeared into the either, candy swirled emotions of relief and fear engulfed me.

Possessions Mean Little to Me

campfireThen it was time for the things. Things that at one time held a vat of feelings and memories of special moments that will never be lived again. Knowing that there was a beauty in the world was great, but knowing that beauty can cut you deep and leave you with nothing but scars and disappointment. Onto the fire went the every single thing that had ever been given or held any attachment whatsoever.  Some of them burned well and caused the fire to burn ever higher.  Some did not, there was a bottle from a special occasion, that only the label disappeared in the wall of flame.

Your Words Showed Their Value

Eyes on FireLast and not least were the words. Words are empty when the emotions that once supported them. Now they are like the crack of a whip every time you read them and realize that they are no more. Let them go, place them in the fire.  Read one final time and destroyed forever.  That is the way of relationships that are born in the fire. They are often ended by the fire. How else could it possibly be?

The cleansing was over, the end had come. The fire went out, the past was gone with its last searing growing ember. Never to be mentioned again in conversation, but the scars remain, not only from the past but from the first moment I looked into the fire.

Fly Like an Eagle on Bloody Sunday

Nostalgic Music Month Day 22

Steve Miller Band by Jon Hilton

The Steve Miller Band has provided the soundtrack for the lives of anyone our age. They put out some of the most iconic songs of the 70’s but then never really recaptured that magic.  As they tried to switch from cool rock band to whatever they thought the 1980’s were looking for they lost their identity and their mojo.  But this is a focus on the mojo they had in their prime. The music transcends time and generations and will help you through life whether you are a picker, grinner, lover or a sinner. I have known many a Joker, smoker or midnight toker and none of them wanted to hurt no one.  Let’s forget the Abracadabra era and focus on the music that transcends time.

  1. Fly Like an Eagle– This is one of the songs that even today, I have to listen to whenever it comes on the radio. I think I have always identified with the theme because freedom seems to be the most important thing to me. When you look at the world and all of its problems. It seems that there should be easier solutions for societies problems. Feed those who don’t have enough to eat. Give clothes to those who need it. It all gets so complicated somehow. And Time keeps on slippin’, slippin’, slippin’ into the future. I think that if, as a society, we ever focused on providing for the greater good of all people we could fly like an eagle to the sea. Great song and great thought. Feed the babies, Who don’t have enough to eat
Shoe the children, With no shoes on their feet, House the people, Livin’ in the street. Oh, oh, there’s a solution.
  2. Take the Money and Run– On the other end of the spectrum is this little ditty. A story about theft and murder and apparently how to get away with it. I don’t think that Billy Joe and Bobby Sue would have been able to escape justice from Billy Mack. He knows exactly what the facts is. I don’t think that this crime spree would have worked out for them in the long run. I mean how much money could they get from that man in his castle? I think they would have to commit quite a few more crimes before they found real financial security. They would have been better served to go to college, build two successful careers and then they wouldn’t have to run so much.   It is a good song though and probably inspired many marathon runners over the years. Bobbie Sue, whoa, whoa, she slipped away. Billy Joe caught up to her the very next day. They got the money, hey. You know they got away. They headed down south and they’re still running today.
  3. Serenade– I think we all need to wake up. The world is running in an unconscious whirl of activity. There are so many things in front of us every day that are beautiful and breathtaking but we only see the time we are behind and the hurry that we have to chase.  Get it done, achieve the goal, but there is a time to appreciate the things that nature provides. We are only here for a short time and should appreciate the sunrises and sunsets we are fortunate enough to experience. This song always makes me stop for a moment and appreciate these moments and the value that they provide. Did you feel the wind, As it blew all around you? Did you feel the love That was in the air? Wake up, wake up, Wake up and look around you. We’re lost in space. And the time is our own.
  4. Jet Airliner– One of the best songs about traveling through life.  There are big jet airliners that carry us anywhere in the world that we want to go. The world is a much smaller place than it used to be.  Home is a thought that continually enters my mind.  I know it is not really a place physically but more of a spiritual destination. Where you are accepted, loved and where you belong. We have all felt like we are far away from that in life. Sometimes doing what we think we need to take us away from this.  That is the thought that “you’ve got to go through hell before you get to heaven.”  Keep clear of all the funky s–t going down in the city and you will hopefully return home in one piece and find happiness.  Goodbye to all my friends at home. Goodbye to people I’ve trusted. I’ve got to go out and make my way. I might get rich you know I might get busted
But my heart keeps calling me backwards. As I get on the 707
Ridin’ high I got tears in my eyes. You know you got to go through hell
    Before you get to heaven.
  5. Rock’n’Me – I learned some valuable lessons from this song. You need to work hard and make money to please my sweet baby. But if she was a real friend of mine, would the amount of money I made matter? It wouldn’t no matter how much she kept on rocking me.  I also learned that it is a lot of travel from Phoenix Arizona all the way to Tacoma, Philadelphia, Atlanta, and L.A. I also learned that girls are warm in Northern California. Must be something about the weather.  All I know is that I want my baby to keep on rockin’ me and to not be suspicious about what I am up to.  In the end, I am not sure this song contributes anything other than a catchy phrase. But it is a great catchy phrase. Don’t get suspicious, now don’t be suspicious. Babe, you know you are a friend of mine. And you know that it’s true that all the things that I do, Are gonna come back to you in your sweet time.

U2 by Mike Martin

October 22, 2017- Nostalgic Music Month: U2

I all to say today, day 22,  for #OctoberNostalgicMusicMonth is Sunday Bloody Sunday. I hope that understand!

Yeah

I can’t believe the news today
Oh, I can’t close my eyes
And make it go away
How long
How long must we sing this song
How long, how long
‘Cause tonight, we can be as one
Tonight

Broken bottles under children’s feet
Bodies strewn across the dead end street
But I won’t heed the battle call
It puts my back up
Puts my back up against the wall

Sunday, Bloody Sunday
Sunday, Bloody Sunday
Sunday, Bloody Sunday

And the battle’s just begun
There’s many lost, but tell me who has won
The trench is dug within our hearts
And mothers, children, brothers, sisters
Torn apart

Sunday, Bloody Sunday
Sunday, Bloody Sunday

How long
How long must we sing this song
How long, how long
‘Cause tonight, we can be as one
Tonight, tonight

Sunday, Bloody Sunday
Sunday, Bloody Sunday

Wipe the tears from your eyes
Wipe your tears away
Oh, wipe your tears away
Oh, wipe your tears away
(Sunday, Bloody Sunday)
Oh, wipe your blood shot eyes
(Sunday, Bloody Sunday)

Sunday, Bloody Sunday (Sunday, Bloody Sunday)
Sunday, Bloody Sunday (Sunday, Bloody Sunday)

And it’s true we are immune
When fact is fiction and TV reality
And today the millions cry
We eat and drink while tomorrow they die

The real battle just begun
To claim the victory Jesus won
On
