Why do we hug? What does it mean to people? I was walking through a parking lot the other day and witnessed two young people in the midst of a pretty intense hug. Both were emotional, to the point of tears and you knew that they were saying good-bye. For a day, a month, or a year I have no idea. But I did realize that I had been a participant in just that kind of hug on several occasions in the past and I was more than just a little jealous.
What are you sure of in life? What philosophy can you stand behind and not shy away from because you are sure of its validity? We all have some non-negotiable items in this cache. The sun will rise, the sun will set. Life is fleeting. You must work hard to be successful. The government is looking out for your best interest. If it isn’t one thing, it’s another. There are many points of view which are considered by people constant, unshakable and permanent fixtures in life and creators of our reality. Yet in reality, they are only interesting points of view that you can choose to believe or discard as you see fit.
When you look at your existence what do you feel? Are you located in your body alone, simply taking up the space that you are physically in at the moment? Or are you more than that? Only you can answer this. Do you make yourself small like a pebble or big like the sky. This decision is made each day by all people living all over the world, in all sorts of circumstances.
It is time to mark another year of existing on this planet and a trip around the sun. (Song at the bottom) I am excited to have made it this far and am encouraged and looking forward to the adventures that the next year is going to bring. Each year in retrospect, I am always kind of stunned by the number of people that have entered my life and effected me in a positive, powerful way. Some who don’t even realize it. Here are my top 49 thoughts on my 49th year.
- It is great to still be here!
Are You Ready To Rise?
For a long time, I believed that if you created a graph of the activity and thought a person experienced in their life it would inevitably have a wide variety of points. There would be high moments where you experienced you best and of course there would be the predictable low moments where tragedy and disappointment visited a life. In between the highs and lows are the steady moments of life that make up the majority of our experiences and most lives exist in this but that chart is not accurate because it is just a representation of our perceptions and possibly limited beliefs.
There can be no more daunting question to answer than to ask yourself who am I ? Then to answer it honestly. Many people automatically list their job and their family situation, but those are outside influences on who you really are, not who you are. Just in case you need to know who you are, I think you can start by recognizing who you are not. What are the factors that make you a totally unique individual living on this Earth?
Beliefs are the ideas which we have chosen to provide a particular attachment to. These are thoughts that we have been told during the course of our lives that have been backed up by experience and our emotional reaction to them. It is important to recognize our beliefs because they will form the paradigms of our lives. These rules will determine the reality that we experience in our lives, so recognizing the limiting beliefs and actively working to change them can make your life much more positive.
Children have a natural sense of wonder and curiosity of all things. How does that work? Why is that color that color? Who is the tallest? The smartest? There are no limits to the questions and the knowledge that children seek. We were all like that at one point, and to return to that kind of mentality could only be a positive for more experienced people.
How much time in life do we spend worrying about being perfect in all we do? How often do we succeed and what would it mean if we were perfect? All of these thoughts had me feeling like my head was spinning off. So I thought I had better write about it quick!
How much time in life do we spend worrying about being perfect in all we do?
The Wizard of Oz has always been a classic, because of the message it teaches. Yearly it is enjoyed by children of all ages, but because of the symbolic search, the characters embark on. The search for personal growth is one that I am very familiar, the ability to think, have a heart, maintain your courage and find a home. I think we are all looking for the same things. Here are a few things I have learned on my trip through Oz.
One of the most common blocks people face in accomplishing their goals is the worry about what others might think of your choices, behaviors or talents. How often have you stopped doing something because you didn’t want to look foolish or be picked on by someone else? This is a limiting thought that can be easily changed if you start to focus on what you are doing in the moment and forget what others are thinking about it, you will enjoy life a whole lot more and find success as well. There are several simple reasons that this is true.
We are all seeking truth in one form or another in our experience of life. The path to truth for each of us is more than likely going to be unique to our lives and will not look exactly the same for any of us. Following your path to truth is going to be a one of a kind journey. So follow it with passion and allow others to do the same.
There are several sure-fire behaviors that we can all choose which are guaranteed to ruin your life, give you less happiness and cause you to be angry each day. Practice these things and you are guaranteed to be unhappy. Be careful because happiness will always seek a way into your life.
Be Mean to Others
A great place to start is to make sure that you are mean to other people. Most people are mean and accepting of others because we see faults in them that we see and dislike in ourselves. So look at what you dislike about yourself, recognize it in someone else and be mean to them. Gossip about them, name call and discriminate if you can.
Question everything and only accept those things prove true. How do we learn? There are several different ways that we can infuse our minds and souls with new ideas and knowledge. However, each individual needs to determine the validity of each morsel of information for themselves, regardless of the source that is providing it. Don’t believe anything except after individual investigation and introspection have proven it to be so. Finding what is true for you is vital to living a life that is honest and true to yourself. What beliefs you accept will determine your reality.
Each day you wake up and have a simple choice as to what type of day you are going to experience. Is it a great day? A good day? A boring day? A bad day? A disappointing day? The decision that you make will determine how your day goes. Our attitude is the biggest factor in how much we experience in life. Life is what you choose to make it.
Personal Growth Leads to Living Well
In our lives, there is nothing so important as seeking out and pursuing opportunities to grow as a person. Just as any other living creature, our purpose in life is to contribute and to continually move toward becoming our best selves. Just as plants are born and start to grow throughout their lives.
As you look at your life and each activity that you are participating in asking yourself if there is a chance for growth in doing this. We are all consciously, physically and mentally going one of two ways. 1. We are getting better or becoming more or growing 2. We are getting worse, becoming less or shrinking.
Each person that I have ever met has in one way or another basked in the glow of their individuality. The certain perks and character traits that made them uniquely them. I have as well clung to these traits to separate myself from the crowd, to show my unique value. Yet I look at society today and see that I am participating in a world that is manipulating all of us into a prison of individuality. This is a prison that keeps us separate from learning about ourselves and our own thoughts. It makes me wonder what I am missing. We are all connected, all we have to do is look for it.
It is not uncommon to move through a day on a very
strict schedule, moving from event to event merely marking time as a restriction in completing the actions of your day. Move quickly, work quickly, think quickly, love quickly. The conditioning of our lives leads us to value brevity in completing all tasks because it is viewed as the most efficient use of time.
Today I fought my greatest enemy. They seemed to be following me throughout my day and gleefully took each opportunity to point out my apparent shortcomings. They railed against me for the decisions made in the past and created an almost maniacal worry about the future. It was a non-stop assault that had its desired effect on me, I felt let down, angry, upset and I wanted to fight back. So I engaged my greatest enemy with the truth which always seems to be the best weapon.
No matter what life brings you, each person has the ability to either be grateful and appreciative of the experience or they can be angry and disillusioned. The choice is always in your hands. Always.
Things Go Wrong Sometimes, Be Grateful
This is an easy idea to cope with when things are going well. There is plenty of money to do whatever you want, all of those you love are healthy and happy and the biggest decision that you need to make is what form of entertainment is in store for you this evening. Of course, you can be grateful and appreciative of this situation. Yet I know many people in just such a predicament and there is very little gratitude or appreciation.
