Getting Grateful

What are you most grateful for?

by Jonathan Hilton  Day 45

gratitude 111It is a difficult task indeed to start to think about what you are most grateful for. Many people will say money. Some will say love. Some will say family. Some will say something else entirely.

I am thankful for all these things, but to me there is no doubt that showing your gratitude is the most important thing to do. The feeling of gratitude is important.  So for me I guess the act of feeling grateful is the thing I am most grateful for today.  Here is why.

Taking things for Granted

gratitude-quotes-16I was the type of person who took many great things in my life for granted. Not appreciating the things that people did for me, out of the goodness of their hearts. Yet I was not grateful, in fact I think I felt entitled to all the things I had in my life.

The problem with that is that you are never really happy with what you have, but always angry or worried about what you don’t have. This is the problem with a lack of gratitude, no matter how much you get your are never truly happy.

When You Lose Everything, You are Grateful for Everything

GratefulIn my life I had the good fortune to lose everything. In that time of turmoil, there are a lot of feelings of self pity, and anger that eventually will consume you or push you to make changes.  I made the decision to change.

It started with a change in attitude. The sun didn’t rise and set because I existed and I could make a decision every day to decide how that day to be happy.  Happiness started with a realization of how lucky I was to have anything at all.

That realization expressed provides the feeling of gratitude. When it comes to events that are difficult to deal with, you designation of either good or bad is your perception of the experience.  The experience is still the same. You might as well be grateful for it.

Gratitude leads to more Gratitude

Once you take a moment to express your gratitude each day, it has been my experience that deepakthe momentum will build and you will find more in your life to be grateful for.  I have read that the act of being grateful is one of the most important emotions that you can experience, because it opens the door for more things to enter your life that will deserve gratitude.

So I am most grateful for the time I take each day to appreciate fully what I experience in my life each and every day.  Away from labels of good or bad, they are experiences that provide all of the situations that combine to teach me the things I need to know to follow my purpose.  It is the moments of thankfulness that we find what is great in ourselves.

  1. Tough question – and you answered it very well. I think I will have to stick with family though. It may be a simple answer, but I wouldn’t be where I am or who I am without them, without them having stuck by me through some rough patches, without them being an ever present guiding force and helping hand, and without all the joys and challenges I’m facing now as my family is expanding. I’m grateful for everything they do, and everything they represent. For my mandatory movie quote: “Nothing matters so much as blood” – Wyatt Earp. (Yes, the terrible Kevin Costner movie, hey I”m a sucker for westerns). In my case though, “blood” includes all of my friends as well.

    1. I agree completely with all that you say. I love westerns too, and I like Kevin Costner, (Probably his only fan), he can’t act but he is relatable I think. Family should be first, in all things because they will stick by you. Thanks for the comment and sharing the mandatory movie quote.

  2. Jon, I know I sound like a broken record, but we are so similar. I, too, lost almost everything until I made some changes. One of those changes was to be more grateful for what I did have. I love the Buddha quotation. I also believe that gratitude brings more to be grateful for. Thanks for the thankful energy. {{{hugs}}} Kozo

    1. Thank you Kozo, it no longer surprises me how similar we are. :-) I was thinking, isn’t it worth “losing everything” to gain much more? I often think of that phrase and know if I didn’t go through all of the tough times then I would never have woken up to a lot of what life has to offer. It was an easy bargain! Thanks for commenting and being a light to others my friend.

  3. I love Deepak. Thanks for those quotations. I have a blog friend you often reminds us to have an attitude of gratitude. It is so important to remember to count our blessings each day and be truly grateful for them. Thank you for yet another wonderfully inspirational post my friend.

    1. You are welcome. I think Deepak knows what he is talking about! I always try to be grateful and to take a bit of time each day to feel it. I think it does a lot for my attitude towards others and through the day. I appreciate your comments Michelle, always a treat to hear from you!

  4. Wow, that’s an answer to this question I’ve never heard before. It’s perfect.
I don’t know what I’m MOST grateful for. There are so many things I’m thankful for, one without the other and life would be so different.
Recently I’ve been grateful for people’s different points of views. It fascinates me how two people can look the same thing and interpret it differently. That’s what I’m grateful for today.

    1. That is a good one MFE, two people look at the exact same scenario and come up with a different interpretation of what has unfolded in front of them. All I know for sure is that being thankful for what you have is a good thing. A very good thing.
