Excited to Be Alive

What gets you excited about life?

We should all be this excited by the prospect each day brings!
We should all be this excited by the prospect each day brings!

Every person no matter what they do has to find things that get him excited about life. They do not have to be complicated or expensive things. They simply get you going and allow you to feel happy about just living on the face of the Earth every day.

I would never presume to speak for anyone but myself but here are the things that I enjoy and make my existence a much more enjoyable experience.

1. Learning and Reading

learningWhen I was a young person, I did not care all that much for learning. It was something that you had to do to get to the next step in life.  This is the wrong way to present education in my mind.  All of us have the ability to learn and expand our minds into whichever areas interest us and strike our fancy.

In the past few years, I have learned more than at any time of my life and it was all done by my own desire to expand my mind.

It was not because of what anyone else thought, or because I was taking a class in order to get a degree.  Learning was taking place because I wanted to be a better person in my life and to live a more meaningful life.   Learning gets me excited about living life today and looking forward to the future.

2. People Are Just Awesome

There are few things that get me more excited about life than the people I have met.  Each person is a unique mixture of personality and intelligence that allows them to contribute to the world in their own unique and powerful way.

Knowing these kinds of people are out there in the world, looking for the best way to live or just making the best of what life has given them, gets me excited about life.  I know that if the good people I have come in contact with are in charge of the world then the future is in good hands.   The people I know definitely get me excited about life.

3. Change Is Always Happening

changeThere is one thing that I am sure of about life, change is going to occur no matter what you do.

Some of the changes you experience are going to flow smoothly and some are going to rattle your cage a little bit more.

There is really only one choice to make though, either you can fight against the inevitable change, which will lead to pain, grief, and sorrow. Or you can choose to roll with the changes that come your way.

I am choosing to ride with the winds of change because they are blowing whether I like it or not.  That is why I have decided to let the changes in life excite me about living rather than force me into a depression about what used to be.  Sometimes the things that change are precious to me, but there are seasons that come and go and in those seasons there are unique and wonderful experiences.

Enjoy them while they last because they will change as surely as winter will follow autumn and summer will follow spring.  These changes get me excited about life.  It would be boring if nothing ever changed, ever!

4.The Boston Red Sox and Baseball

awesome red soxBaseball is definitely not for everyone. It is a sport that seems to be moving at a leisurely pace but is not.

In fact, there is a mental aspect to the game that should keep you interested and engaged throughout a game, or a season.  The Red Sox are a passion for me because they are the team of my family.

The love of this team has tied generations together and even when there was a hard time finding common ground we could all state an opinion about the Red Sox.

This love of the Red Sox gets me excited about life because it connects me with the people in my life who I have cared about who are gone. I remember when my grandfather took us to Fenway for the first time.  It was the quintessential ballpark experience.

I walked up the stairs leading to the field and the field was so green, the uniforms looked so white and there a few feet from me was Dwight Evans, Jim Rice and Carl Yastremski.   Then I glanced over at the green monster. I was around 9 or 10 years old that day and any question I had about loving that team was answered on that day.

It is interesting to note about my grandfather, he was born in 1920 and died in 1993 so he never saw them win a world series. I like to think he was feeling the vibe I sent to him in 2004.  He would never have believed it.  I sent a special prayer to him that night because the Red Sox got us both excited about life.

5. Writing from my Inner Thoughts

quotes-about-writing-4Finally there is the practice which has come to take up so much of my time.  For many years I fought against the urge to express myself in words and to arrange them in only the shortest and simplest patterns.

My prose expressed very little about myself or what I thought or felt.  Really it is only recently like the melting ice at the end of winter that the words have started to flow.

6. Creativity, I believe is the key to unlocking your unique talents and thoughts.  If you are stuck at anything then, do something creative.  Draw, write, paint, sculpt, knit, spin, whatever you can do to be creative will lead you to the answer you are looking for.  Writing for me is the way I answer the questions that life has thrown at me.

I once worried about the quality of my words and the judgment they might render from others but I have learned to let that go.  My words are mine, they express what I think and anyone reading them has the ability to like them, hate them or ignore them completely.  That is their prerogative.  I can’t write anything for the sake of pleasing someone else, it would be a waste of time.

Writing allows my inner thought to have an outer expression, the voice that can’t speak, speaks through the written word and that is the reason that writing gets me excited about life!

  1. I’m with you on the learning and reading, skeptical about the people being awesome (there are a few exceptions), and must tell you that your sox fandom is the wrong color–I think you meant White. 🙂

    1. No I am sure about the color of my sox. White Sox are pale and you are the first person I have ever met who is admittedly a White Sox fan. Its ok we can still be friends, 🙂 People are pretty awesome when you let them. Sometimes they suck like vampires but then there are great people out there who do amazing things. I felt much like you not that long ago but you know what? Everybody is doing the best they can. They are just annoying in the process. Look past that and you have someone who is totally unique and in their own way awesome. Thanks for commenting and reading. I liked your facebook page twice because that is how I roll!

      1. I appreciate it greatly! Being a Sox fan here is a point of contention, because we also have the Cubs. Cub fans are the worst people in the world.

        1. I can imagine that would be a problem. Hang in there, the Cubs are very bad, I like the White Sox a bit better than them. Cubs are pathetic and kind of weak, but the White Sox are good once in awhile at least. 🙂

  2. Hmm, your posts make me think, which I like. I agree with you about people, I’m fortunate that after working for 30 years for the last 15 months I have ended up in a line of work I would never have contemplated, surrounded by the most caring and creative people I have ever met. I know this will change, I’m making the most of every day. I love reading too, spending time in the garden, being with my partner and dog and creating stuff.

  3. Reading and writing get me excited. But I think what is exciting me the most right now is that I’m finding my voice again. I’ve been listening to the voice of my addiction for so long that I forgot what my voice sounds like to my ears. It is nice to finally begin to hear me again. As always your post make me think, make me pause, and remind to be thankful. Have a great weekend

    1. I am very glad that you are finding your voice again Kira! I know how that feels, mine was not hidden by addiction but by neglect and the thoughts of what I thought I should be. Really you can see you blossoming in your writing, and in your confidence. We all have obstacles to overcome, and I am glad to see you leaping over yours. Love youself, you are worth it. 🙂 I am so grateful for your comments, they always make my day. 🙂

        1. You are a good person and deserve to be supported! 🙂 We all have struggles and hurdles to overcome. I personally want to see all of the people that I know clear all of their hurdles and be happy! You deserve to be happy with life. Keep being the awesome and creative person you are!

  4. I don’t get very excited anymore. Sometimes there will be something that will excite me, but lately I just try to go with the flow. I don’t know much about Baseball. I’ve seen it being played on the odd occasion, and it seems to be a bit like cricket – similar but different. Writing excites me, but it also frustrates me often. Wishing you a good day, Jon. Always a pleasure reading your posts.

    1. Thank you for your comments Michelle. I am sure that there are things in your life that you enjoy. Friends, creating, or inspiring which are all things I see you are very good at. I think that the excitement isn’t expressed the same way as we get older but perhaps it should be. 🙂 Writing is a frustrating thing sometimes, just like everything in life. What excites me is to write what I feel inside and then publish it and know that it is a complete representation of what I was feeling at that moment. Baseball is like cricket but also very different. In America it is the one game that I think everyone has at least tried at some point in their life. For me it is not just baseball but this team the Boston Red Sox which are almost a religion in my family. It is always so good to see your comments and read your thoughts on my blog. I am grateful for all of your contributions. 🙂

  5. I agree with you about everything, but baseball, Jon. Sorry.:(
I love the excitement about people and creativity. If you think about it, that is what we do blogging everyday. We create and share with other people and they do the same for us. What a wonderful community.
I am also excited about changing the world. I am excited to cultivate compassion where there wasn’t any before. I am excited about peace spreading like warm butter. I am excited about treating women as the goddesses that they are. And I am excited about our friendship, Jon.
    {{{Hugs}}} Kozo

    1. Great to hear from you Kozo! Baseball is an acquired taste. Someday maybe. I think you are so right about the blogging community there are many people who are so exciting and interesting that I have a hard time keeping up with all of their wonderful work. But I do the best that I can. I think you are well on your way to changing the world with bloggers for peace and changing yourself. Inspiration for many others comes right from your blog and your thoughts. Keep being the awesome person that you are. I am grateful for your comment today and as always I think you are the man!

  6. Love this Jon! :-). I’m feeling a bit stressed out lately, and I needed this reminder.

I get excited about the endless possibilities in each encounter we have with another person. There is so much opportunity to make a difference in someone’s life – through even just a simple simple, or a kind word.

I get excited about the wealth of information at our fingertips – blog posts, podcasts, audiobooks, ebooks etc. And the chance to speak to like-minded people is so easy now.

    Blessings,
    Meg

    1. Thank you Meg for your comment and for taking the time to read this. I am glad the it could help you refocus on enjoying life and dealing with the stress that comes with it. I love your attitude toward people. You exactly understood what I meant. I also appreciate the incredible capacity we have to communicate. How else could someone from Australia and Maine communicate so much and so well? Extremely grateful for your comments and support here! Keep being awesome! 🙂

  7. I’m with you on most of these. Writing, change, people, learning are an all time motivator for me as well. I could be a professional student my whole life if that could pay for the bills! I totally agree that we should all find the one thing or things that motivate us to get up out of bed with excitement each morning. Lovely post 🙂

    1. No kidding about being a professional student. I have always said the if I could have made money going to college I would never have left! A great environment socially and educationally. I find that life is a good motivator. I have determined a short next step in my life and am looking forward to seeing where that one will take me. 🙂 Thank you for reading and commenting Raimy-D. I read your post about drawing and can’t wait to give it a go. Probably on Saturday I will have time for that. Looks like fun.

    1. Thank you Michele, it is great to have you here! 🙂 All Red Sox fans are always welcome. Grateful you read and left a comment! Made my day. I hope that you come on back and leave more of your thoughts!!
