The Right Mentality Brings Victory In Golf

In most activities in life, success or failure starts in the mind. If you believe you can’t do something, you won’t be able to do something. The same applies to golf. The masters at golf are those who refuse to be intimidated, who believe they can win and go ahead do all they can to win, those who play with right mentality in golf. The right mentality can be managed, and here are some tips on how to do.

Visualize Playing Perfect Shots In Your Mind
As good as it is to believe in yourself, it’s not enough you must learn to practice playing golf on and off the course. Since success starts in your mind, you should learn to visualize playing golf in your mind. Visualize playing golf in your mind and getting it right. If you get it right in your mind you’ll be surprised how easy it will be when it’s time to actually play it on the course.

Self Confidence
If you are going to be the best in anything in life there is a need for you to first believe in yourself. If you don’t believe in yourself you won’t be able to overcome the challenges that come your way easily and you will be intimidated by other people’s success. In golf, the same applies, you need to believe in yourself, believe you can master the game and compete with the best of the best. If you believe it you can achieve it.

Don’t Let Others Intimidate
The reason why some people find it difficult to improve their game is because they feel intimidated by the people they play with. They see themselves as not good enough to compete with such people. This sets up a mental barrier that actually reflects in their game. You must be confident in your golf game, believe in yourself and refuse to be intimidated by others on the course. You are all playing on the same course with the same kind of clubs, it’s just in getting the ball into the hole as quick as you can with less attempts. Refuse to see the others, see yourself as having a good time and you will be pleasantly surprised how easy it is to beat those you think are too good for you to play against.

As mentioned above, it is important to note that no game is completely won in the mind. Victory starts in the mind but it doesn’t end there. You must make an effort to apply what you have in your mind into real life games. Practice and training is important factor that join the gap between winning in the mind and winning in real life, so practice is very important in improving your game in golf.

Ensure you cultivate the right mentality and develop a good training and practice schedule, then you will able to improve your game as you won’t be easily discouraged even when you don’t get it right in your first attempts. When you have the right mentality, your initial failures and setbacks are perceived as part of the process of getting better and becoming a master golfer.

Golf Ball Comparisons Skills You Need To Lower Your Score

Skills on golf ball comparisons are needed for you to effectively improve your game as a golfer. Even if you are not a golfer but selecting a golf ball for someone you know, these skills can prove handy as they will help you make a correct purchase.

Since the 1950s, golf balls have become more and more technologically advanced than ever. With rapid changing technology, methods of producing a golf ball tailored to individual golfers’ needs is crucial.

With such technology backing the golf balls of today, they have become very much a factor in optimizing your golf game as compared to the mid 1500s. Hence, every golfer needs to be playing a golf ball that is optimizing his or her game for maximum performance.

As each golf ball is very much different from the other, there are some critical factors that need to be compared to suit your needs. For effective golf ball comparisons, these areas needs to be considered.

1. Materials of a golf ball - Golf ball composition differ from manufacturer to manufacturer. Majority of the golf balls used to be hard cover surlyn types but it is not necessary the case anymore. The materials vary to suit the different types of feel, distance, spin or trajectory that they are trying to achieve for certain categories of golfers.

The common type of materials are surlyn, ionomer, urethane and polybutadiene. Surlyn is normally used as the cover. There are however exceptional cases with Surlyn as a thin outer layer for enhanced velocity and trajectory while exhibiting control with Urethane. Urethane is the softest material used for the cover which encourages spin around the green. Ionomer works great with as a soft cover replacing Surlyn for more spin. Polybutadiene is generally rubber that forms the core of the golf ball.

2. The construction of a golf ball - Now golf ball comparisons can even mean comparing the pieces of a golf ball. Compared to the old balata golf ball, the pieces of a golf ball can vary from two to four pieces. Even the type of pieces vary from brand to brand. Callaway features a duo core four piece golf ball in their Tour I series. In comparison with Bridgestone B330 series double mantle layer four piece golf ball, both are four piece yet with different constructions.

The good news is, you do not need to bother about the various types of constructions. You only need to focus on the core, cover, the layer beneath the cover and the dimples.

For selection process, two piece are normally distance balls for the high handicapped golfers. Three piece would have a added control with a bit more spin on the green. However as engineers get better, this information is no longer that accurate but can only be used as a guide for golf ball comparisons.

3. Compression ratings - Golf ball ratings are mostly in the low compression ratings. Compression ratings range from 0 the softest to 200 the highest. A low compression means less velocity and less driver spin on initial impact off the tee and vice versa. A higher velocity on general means more distance and on some occasions, harder feel.

Note: Compression ratings are a largely over rated and debated issue on the net. For more clarification, check out my website for more details.

Most golf balls in the market are low compression ratings. These type of compression are suited for lower swing rate players to achieve a better distance.

4. Dimples - These are the small depressions on the golf balls which we so commonly see nowadays. These dimples improve the flight trajectory and enhances greater carry and distance. The difference between the dimples from one golf ball to another is the size and the depth. On a general guideline, a more shallow dimple from the appropriate depth will increase the height of trajectory and a deeper dimple will reduce the height trajectory. All affects the distance and type of ball roll you want to have after landing.

For a general guide, know the type of ball flight you currently have. If you have a low trajectory and you are playing a distance ball and wish to improve your distance, you might consider to change to a golf ball with shallower dimples for a improved distance performance.

With these information, you can equip yourself the skills in determine the feel, spin, distance, trajectory, tendency to side spin or hook, roll etc. These will aid you in selecting the golf balls best for you and your current level of skill.

For example, comparing golf ball A and B, you will know which one is harder on the outer casing when you read the technical specs. Surlyn cover compared with urethane cover will mean that the golf ball with surlyn cover is much faster in velocity on initial impact should all other factors remain constant.

However, there is still more into this than you think. Always think select the initial golf ball followed by optimize, tweak and upgrade to other golf balls as your game grows!

Improving Your Golf Swing: Some Simple Golf Tips

When developing a technique to use in regards to improving your golf swing, you must first break the golf swing down into segments and the segments should be as follows, feet placement, hip swing, shoulder placement, grip and head position. With these five important components in relation to the golf swing, you can help your golf game by carefully taking a look at each one. From this position, you’re much less likely to cut across the ball through impact. With minimal practice, those killer pulls and pull-slices will turn into powerful draws. The golf swing is a sequence of movements, and if you start in the right position and engage the right movements, the rest will follow. If you make a poor start to your swing, then those effects can be negative, affecting consistency and distance.

Fundamentally improving your golf swing requires the golfer to maintain a fixed spine angle, rotate around a fixed spine angle, and maintain specific postural positions in every phase of the swing. In order to accomplish this the muscles of your body must have certain levels of strength. In relation to the golf swing it’s your ability to sustain the proper spine position and center of gravity during movement.

To start improving your golf swing, please think of your body as divided at the waist into two parts, each of which is going to feel as if it’s being used wholly differently. The rotation of the lower followed by upper body turns the hips and shoulders to face the target. At impact the body weight will move onto the left foot (approximately 80%) and the right heel is ‘pulled’ from the floor by the rotation of the hips.

Try this exercise, take an ordinary coat hanger and grip the longest part just as you would a golf club with the hook between your wrists and directed away from your body. The widest points making a line between your torso and the “ball. With this setup, work through your golf swing and watch the rotation of the triangle through the air. In order to do this, your wrists have to turn as you shift arm position. Loosening your grip allows your wrists to rotate in a natural motion.

Golf weight and training exercises are one of the best and the quickest ways to improving your golf swing speed and power. The heavier the shaft, the lower and straighter your shots will be, and the lighter the shaft the higher and more variable your shots will be. Many players try to make their clubs heavier by adding lead tape to the head, which changes the overall weight, the swing weight, and the shaft flex.

Oftentimes, in golf terms the opening and closing, of the clubface is termed releasing of the club. This is where the hands become an integral part of the golf swing. The simplest way to improving your golf swing and to shape your shots is to make sure your clubface faces the target but your body lines are right or left depending on the ball flight desired. Do not change your grip or swing.

Moreover, the angle of the club head must be checked on two fronts: First, the face of the club head, or the horizontal angle, must be pointing in the direction you want the ball to fly. Second, the vertical angle, which is largely effected by how you hold the club and address the ball, must be set up so that you do not lose distance in your shot.

As you slowly lift your club, do not cock your wrist too soon. Try to shorten your swing and make sure you stay down and get the ball through on your down swing. Perfect golf swing drills centered around the takeaway continues with your left wrist cupped, right arm above your left and right knee flexed.

Depending on your dominant hand the club should rest against the palm of your opposite hand and be held somewhat loosely at the fingertips with the heel of your hand providing pressure. The dominant hand should then be placed in the same position creating a V with the thumb and index fingers.

While you must work on technique and position, when it comes to actually playing the game, you need to rely on the platform and motion you have started. The next time you practice, try hitting some balls starting with the clubhead a foot or so in front (toward the target) of the ball. The address stage is about the body’s position and the proper grip. The backswing is the start of the body movement and positions the body before beginning the downswing.

Let’s face it, golf is probably the most difficult sport in the world. It takes a great deal of skill, mental fortitude and perseverance to excel at it.

Jack Nicklaus Golf

Jack William Nicklaus, well known as “The Golden Bear,” was born on January 21, 1940 and may well be, as his fans will tell you, among the greatest pro golfers ever.

Growing up in Columbus, Ohio, a pharmacist’s son, he was a student in Upper Arlington High School and beat a mild case of polio as a youth. Turning to golf at ten years old and shooting an amazing 51 for nine holes, he broke 70 at age 13 on eighteen holes.
He won the 1956 Ohio Open while only 16 and the US Amateur twice, in 1959 and 1961 - and in the 1960 open, he came in second only to Arnold Palmer. In the same year, Nicklaus was part of the team which won the Eisenhower Trophy, scoring a still-standing 269 four round score.

By 1962, Nicklaus was playing professionally, winning the US Open for the first time. His defeat of Arnold Palmer gave his immediate fame - he went on to win the Masters Tournament twice before the 1960s came to a close; although he would not win another US Open championship until 1970. The 1970s saw Nicklaus taking 9 other major titles, breaking Bobby Jones’ 13 title record. In 1986, Jack Nicklaus played and won his last major tournament, his 18th - and at 46, becoming the oldest player to do so.

In 1990, Nicklaus joined the PGA Senior tour. He would win 10 tournaments on the tour by 1996. Eight of these were major tournament wins, no less. His last appearance in a major tournament would be in 2005. Since then, he has stayed active in the golf world - designing courses, holding his own PGA tournament (the Memorial Tournament) and writing both autobiographies and instructional books - on how to play his way, of course.
Nicklaus, like Palmer came to fame with the advent of televised golf games. By 1962, he had won an unprecedented $60,000 as a pro golfer, becoming the third-highest paid player in the sport as well as winning the Rookie of the Year award. The following year was one of his best, winning bith the Maters and the PGA championships.

Nicklaus was always known as a record setter, having set a record for lowest score in the last 36 holes during the1964 British Open and a 1965 Masters-winning 271. This record stood until 1997 when it was broken by Tiger Woods.
Interviewed in 1970 after the death of his father, Nicklaus said: “I was playing good golf, but it really wasn’t that big a deal to me one way or the other. And then my father passed away and I sort of realized he had certainly lived his life through my golf game. I really hadn’t probably given him the best of that. So I sort of got myself back to work. So 1970 was an emotional one for me from that standpoint-it was a big boost.” Whatever the reason Nicklaus was certainly a record setter - he was the first player to win all four major tournaments twice in the course of his career.

Nicklaus won his third PGA player of the year award in 1974 and became one of the first additions to the World Golf Hall of Fame. The following year, he took his fifth Masters and fourth PGA championship titles. He was named the ABC Wide World of Sports Athlete of the year the same year. Unbelievable for anyone but the golden bear, he won his sixth Masters in 1986. In fact, Nicklaus shares the record for having won all major championship three times with Tiger Woods. For his record breaking achievements in the game and his support for the sport off of it, The Golden Bear will always be a legend to golf fans. He remains an active force n the golf world and is still continuing to contribute to the game - Jack Nicklaus is nothing if not impressive.

Harvey Pennick Says Build Your Game Around Your Best Golf Iron

Are you looking for some silver bullet to improve your golf game? There’s no such thing, but I’ve been (re)reading Harvey Pennick’s books on golf, and something struck me. Something he said really stuck in my mind: If you are an amateur golfer, you can get very good results by building your game around your #5 or #7 iron.

Now, who is Harvey Pennick and why should you listen to him? In his heyday, Mr. Pennick was golf coach to several US Open Winners - Tom Kite among the most prominent of his students.

He also successfully coached university golf teams, and more than a few weekend golfers. He ended his career as the much-beloved club pro of the Austin Country Club, having successfully seen to the golfing needs of hundreds of club members.

So why does he say stick to one iron, especially the #5 or #7? First of all, the #5 and #7 irons are the most used golf irons among amateurs, being medium range clubs for many golfers. Once you are off the tee and on the fairway, you no longer need the range of the driver. Looking back, my best shots on the fairway were always aimed at some particular point I could see clearly. And any point I could see clearly was within range of my #5 iron.

The point is: when you stick with one main iron, you get better faster (with it). It becomes your best buddy, the one you go to most often. You quickly learn what it can do, and what it can’t. You learn how to bend its performance to meet your needs. A lot of uncertainty disappears.

Let’s say you make the #5 your favorite. You are faced with a tricky shot. You estimate the distance at 70 yards with a 15 yard margin of error to the bunker … you hope. You know your #5 iron can give you that distance with a 3/4 backswing. You know because you have done it many, many times in the past, because this is the club you build your game around. You swing your club, and lo and behold, the ball rolls to a stop with 5 yards to spare.

In theory, you could have done the same thing with a full swing from your #7 iron. But you can’t be sure, because you don’t play enough golf to practice equally with both clubs. So you have to choose, jack of all trades, master of none, by playing all your irons from #3 to #9, or just master one iron, which can get you most places you need to go.

Remember that you are a weekend golfer. You don’t play the US Open, and don’t need to master every iron in your bag. You don’t need the level of precision and control which every iron can give you.

Unless you can spend everyday on the golf course, the fastest way to improve your golf game is to simplify your game as much as possible. Minimize the number of clubs you actually play with in order to develop the skill and consistency with those clubs quickly. Stick with the driver, #5 iron, putter and one wedge, and you’ll see real improvement quickly. These four clubs will serve you most of your time.
