49 Thoughts on Turning 49

49 thoughts for 49 years
49 thoughts on 49 years

It is time to mark another year of existing on this planet and a trip around the sun. (Song at the bottom) I am excited to have made it this far and am encouraged and looking forward to the adventures that the next year is going to bring. Each year in retrospect, I am always kind of stunned by the number of people that have entered my life and affected me in a positive, compelling way. Some who don’t even realize it. Here are my top 49 thoughts on my 49th year.

  • It is great to be here still!
  • Conversations with people are some of the most critical moments in life.

  • I wonder why the world hates the New England Patriots, whom  I love so dearly.

  • People are kind and giving for the most part, and it is beautiful to watch.

  • You can’t hurry love. It just has to wait.

  • Old friends are the best ones because there is no bullshitting each other.

  • People criticize others only about weaknesses or fears that they possess themselves.

  • Love is my religion

  • The world, through nature, is all connected. If you look at the sky from anywhere on the planet and breathe deeply, you can find peace within.

  • Gratitude for all that you have brings peace and happiness to your life.

  • Gossip is the lowest form of communication.

  • My experience this year has been sponsored by Panera Bread and Planet Fitness

  • I learn something new every day

  • I can like you and not like your opinions

  • I want to know who put the old guy in the mirror

  • Working out and taking care of ourselves is vital to happiness.

  • Kindness counts and is a choice

  • Attitude is everything. Create or destroy, how you approach life will determine your influence.

  • The right question can change your life

  • People will astound you and confound you.

  • Everybody has a unique value

  • I am not 21 years old anymore, or 31, or 41. But I feel the same on the inside.

  • Even when you do things right, pain can be the result.

  • Consciousness is not something you achieve, and it is a constant evolution of expanding unique possibilities.

  • People can only criticize those weaknesses they see in themselves; otherwise, they don’t notice them

  • Enjoy all the people in your life. If they are not enjoyable, get them out of your life

  • Life is too short to waste time, not being who you are.

  • Our thoughts lead to words. Our words lead to feelings. Our feelings lead to actions. It all starts with thoughts.

  • Curiosity is a good thing.

  • Forgiveness is vital to being happy. You can never be satisfied if you carry a grudge against someone else or yourself.

  • Worry is wasting today’s energy on something that may never happen. Fear has no power to stop it.

  • What would life look like if people weren’t afraid?

  • Pain or pleasure- all decisions in life are made based on this ratio. Does the joy of doing something outweigh the pain of not doing it?

  • Whatever you focus on in life increases.

  •  There is a difference between being interested in something and being committed to it.

  • The obstacles in life generally teach you how to hurdle well.

  • The subconscious mind runs the show of life. Make sure it is running a good one.

  • All people have energy, and the frequency of that energy reflects the beliefs of that person.

  • Actions will destroy fear, always. Take significant, bold, forceful action.

  • Magic does happen when you believe in the results.

  • Our past is prolog to the story of our lives we write right now.

  • Nothing in life should be taken personally.

  • We all have a personal legend, and we write that every day.

– Be honest, transparent, and impeccable with your words, misunderstandings, and false expectations disappear.

  • You can’t assume anything about someone else, their actions, or thoughts. Ask questions, and be sure.
  • Thinking about something and doing it are two very different things! Take Action!

  • If you don’t like the situation you are in, then change it, accept it, or leave it.

  • Being yourself ultimately should be the focus of life, if you never let anyone see who you are, how can you attract people you need, and who need you?

  • There it is for this year, 49 thoughts on turning 49. I remember when I thought 25 was ancient, now I don’t think I am all that old. Life is a short journey whose ending is already known. It is the actions we take and the experiences we affect positively along the way that matter.

I look forward to the next trip around the sun.

    How Old are You?

How old would you be if you didn’t know how old you are?

    by Jonathan Hilton

Why is it that we get all hung up on labeling our journey through life by the number of years we have simply existed.  I have to admit, when you are young, it is a great day to be the center of attention and get some great gifts, but that changes as you age.  From being kind of a neat day to becoming another discriminating notch on the journey of life.

Since I like life, publicly admitting I am one year closer to the end of this existance, is not a fun exercise.  Yet even if we don’t acknowledge it in public and hide from it, we still age.  If I had suddenly lost count somewhere around 22 and had no idea what my label should be, what would I guess my age to be?  That is the reason for the disection of the aging process.

    How old are You?
I am proudly 16850 days old

    You Look Marvelous!

As you look at the physical self, you have to be careful because there are two ways to look at yourself. One is through what the mirror tells you, and that can be depressing if you rely on that.

Gray hair, or no hair can be a clue as to the aging process, but as I often say, (the more gray I get, the more I say it), just because there is snow on the rooftop doesn’t mean the fire isn’t burning inside.

Many people including myself, have invested so much into relating to our physical beings that we sometimes don’t think we look quite like we do.  In fact, we have an image of ourselves that is quite a bit dated.

If you want a reality check sometime, take a moment, and really look into the mirror. Don’t thing about what you would change, just observe how you look.  You do not look the same as you did even last year much less ten or fifteen years ago.

Accept the person that you see, enjoy what you do have and send a little love your own way.  You have earned it.

That leads to the next part of this equation for me, to look at how you feel. I personally do not feel a bit different from I did 25 years ago. I don’t have the same speed, stamina, or resiliency physically, but other than that I feel exactly the same. OK so I am not 21 physically, but I am not in the retirement home, I would put my physical age at 35.

I Can’t Be As Old As I Think

Mentally I am glad that I am not back in my earlier development, because the quality of thoughts that I entertained were neither deep nor were they

    how old are you?
    Not me yet.

all that positive. Fortunately I was not an overly negative person, but I was also clueless in my thoughts.

I was young and somewhat self-centered, so I am glad that those days are over. I would like to think that I have found a nice balance at this point in life around not only the quality of thoughts I entertain but in my acceptance and care for the rest of the world. My mental age would be 55 at least.

It is one of the trade offs you get with an older body, an older, wiser mentality. There is more understanding and a broader view of things.  I can only hope the depth of thought and acceptance of others continues to grow, as the number label of age rises.

    Spiritual Age

Spiritually there is no way to calculate this age because the older you get the more you understand that there is very little that we understand about life and God and spirituality.  There was a time I thought I knew

    spiritual age
    I meant Ten

what life was all about, and how we all fit in, I was sure of that.

Today as I look at those thoughts, I can see them only as steps up a winding staircase that keeps the answer hidden from me.

The more I climb the closer I feel I am to understanding, but I still can’t see what is at the top of the stairs.  So I would give myself a spiritual age of 10, knowing nothing. However I am hopeful that by climbing the stairs, my intellect will increase with the experience. One can only hope.

If you average those out and divide by three you come up with an age of 33.33333333 and I guess that works for me.  It is a lot younger than I actually am so it makes me feel good about this post.

By the way I am exactly 16850 days old today.

    Age is just a number

In the end, the time you have been living in your life is just a number and it is up to you to decide for yourself what you think is the appropriate level of activity and amount of thought.  How you treat and accept others will probably stem from this reality. All of us are facing battles each day. With the experience of age, generally comes an understanding of others.

I would encourage us to label our journey in a more relevant way, the number of kind things we do, or the positive impact we have on the world.  You could be 111,000 acts of kindness, or perhaps you have been accepting of others 289,324 times.  Or any other more worthwhile measure than age.

How old would you be if you didn’t know how old you are?

I will get by, I will bet by, I will get by, I will survive.

    The Climb to Fame

    Nostalgic Music Month Day 26

    David Bowie by Jon Hilton

It would be hard to have a nostalgic music month and not include the decades of creative power the late great David Bowie has provided to the soundtrack of our lives. He had a shock value in the 70’s, which was really before my time, but in the 1980’s he was a part of the MTV video era that introduced me to his music and made me pay attention to his music in more depth. Like with all of these artists it is difficult to choose just a few songs, so I did the best that I could.

    1. Fame– Who didn’t think at a young age that they would be famous someday. I know I always thought I would be a famous athlete. Unfortunately, that plan didn’t pan out. But this song makes you wonder if the price is worth the reward of fame for sure.  We should always be careful what we ask for because we just might get it.  In our society today, they love to build people up, just to tear them down and then if they can build them back up again.  It is a crazy game where celebrity is more important than substance.  Fame is probably not worth the cost. Fame makes a man take things over. Fame lets him loose, hard to swallow. Fame puts you there where things are hollow (fame). Fame, it’s not your brain, it’s just the flame. That burns your change to keep you insane.
    2. Let’s Dance– When you are young, dancing is a natural part of your expression. As I got older, dancing became a much harder thing to do. Letting yourself go, for all to see. It was difficult to do. This song takes me back to a time when I was young and danced with a passion because it was fun. As I have got even older, I realize that the only reason we don’t dance is that we are worried about what others think. Since what others think of you is irrelevant there is no reason you shouldn’t give your best dance at every opportunity. Let’s dance. Let’s dance. For fear, your grace should fall
Let’s dance. For fear tonight is all. Let’s sway. You could look into my eyes
Let’s sway. Under the moonlight, this serious moonlight.
    3. China Girl– This song always reminds me of how fickle a young man’s affections can be. This song came out around 1983. There were many different young ladies that I was “in love” with at that time.  I had no more idea of what love was then than I do now apparently. But the memories of all of those experiences make me smile when I think of a young man trying to figure out life, in a school full of a bunch of other young people trying to do the same.  All I can say for sure today is that I did the best I could.   I could escape this feeling, with my China girl
I feel a wreck without my, little China girl. I hear her heart beating, loud as thunder. Saw they stars crashing. I’m a mess without my, little China girl.
    4. Changes– It is a consistent and inevitable force in life that all people seem to have a difficult time dealing with. Looking at your own life you can see the changes that have happened to you physically, emotionally, and in experience. But inside there is still that same person that you always have been. That essence of you never gets old but collects experience. Change is going to happen, enjoy the good things because they won’t last forever. Know that the bad things won’t last forever. Life is change. I watch the ripples change their size. But never leave the stream. Of warm, impermanence and So the days float through my eyes, But still the days seem the same.
    5. Golden Years– This song typifies what this whole Nostalgic Music Month was conceived for. We look back at the past and idealize certain parts of it. Forgetting the negative and building up the positive. To some, there was no better time. To me, I think I am realistic and I try to remember the true past. There was a lot of good but also nothing was easy all the time. There were lessons learned that came at a hard price. There were tough times of loss and sadness.  But for today and the purpose of this song, we are looking at the days of our youth as the golden years, where life was all before us and we could do anything. Even though there are fewer sunsets in front of us than there are behind. The value of our days are still golden. Don’t let me hear you say life’s taking you nowhere, angel. Come get up my baby. Look at that sky, life’s begun. Nights are warm and the days are young.Come get up my baby.

Miley Cyrus by Mike Martin October 26, 2017

Today my daughter, Kyera Ripley, turns sweet sixteen. Kyera is an amazing person, smart as they come, and already has a job.

Miley Ray Cyrus, an American singer, songwriter, and actress, also had a job as a teenager. She became a teen idol starring as the character Miley Stewart in the Disney Channel television series Hannah Montana in 2006, starring alongside her daddy Billy Ray Cyrus, who became famous with his – Achy Breaky Heart

    Mike Martin’s favorite show

Kyera is not a Miley Cyrus fan, but she and I must have watched a few hundred of episodes of Hannah Montana together. Don’t tell anyone, but I really liked the show. Though a little racy at times, the family show is filled with life lessons and provided great topics for conversations during Kyera’s Hannah Montana years.

I can’t imagine growing up in the public spotlight, the pressures and judgments must be unbearable. Miley has been overly securitized and condemned. With all that nonsense, she has remained confident and is still adored by many.

Billy Joel, a famous American singer-songwriter, and pianist seems to have much admiration for Miley Cyrus when they performed New York State of Mind together at Madison Square Garden

Billy Ray must be as proud as Miley as I am of Kyera. Being a young person in 2017 is a challenge. Because of Social Media and generations of overly critical adults, the young people of today are experiencing hate, jealousy, and loathing, on a scale that has never been seen before.

My advice to all you overly critical Asshats. Take a good long look in the mirror and fix your own house before trying to condemn a generation, that basic biology says, are a heck of a lot shrewder than yourself

My advice for Kyera on her 16th birthday. Don’t listen to the hate honey, trust in your instincts, and always remember it is not where you are going but how you get there.

    Happy Birthday, Kyera-I love you!

    Miley Cyrus – The Climb

    The struggles I’m facing
    The chances I’m taking
    Sometimes might knock me down
    But no, I’m not breaking

    I may not know it
But these are the moments that
    I’m gonna remember most, yeah
    Just gotta keep going

And I, I got to be strong
    Just keep pushing on

‘Cause there’s always gonna be another mountain
I’m always gonna wanna make it move
Always gonna be an uphill battle
Sometimes I’m gonna have to lose

Ain’t about how fast I get there
Ain’t about what’s waiting on the other side
    It’s the climb, yeah!

Please, have a great day, and if you have any questions, drop us a line and please partake in #OctoberNostalgicMusicMonth and while you are at it take a trip to Greenville, Maine-I understand the foliage is majestic this time of year! #visitGreenville

    Rhythm of Life

Law of Rhythm- All things have a rhythm, a cycle, or an ebb and flow.

There is a rhythm in all aspects of our life.  It is in everything from our daily routines to the natural world all around us. Things work in cycles, sometimes the flow is intense like a thunderstorm and others the flow is smooth and easy like a gently flowing stream. But all of your experience is moving as a part of a larger mix of the world.  Calendars, astrological movement, tides, and seasons are all easy to see examples of how rhythm affects your life.  Learning to dance with the tempo is going to determine if you are enjoying the ebb and flow of your life. Understanding that your life is a cycle itself can provide meaning and direction for you in your daily activities.

The Unsteady March of Creation and Destruction

In hindsight, looking at anything it is easy to see whatever it is as a fluid creation of yourself or life in general. But when all things have closely evaluated the ebb and flow of its creation are quickly revealed. All things have periods of intensity followed by those of easy creation.  Like the heating of iron to create steel, there are times of intense heat and those of significant cooling in order to create the perfect final product. Rhythm is the creative tempo of life.  In the life cycle of all things, there are times of creation, destruction, and preservation.  Each interacting with others to make or break all of the experiences we have in life.

The value here is to look for the rhythms in your life and see the tempo with which things are moving.  Jobs will come with an excitement of something new and leave as a mind-numbing obligation. The situation was the same but the rhythm of perception changes as you grow, and move to your own music. Look for the rhythm of your relationships and see how they ebb and flow.  People come into your life like they are arriving on the tide. They leave their influence and then are whisked away back out of your life.  Were they even really there?  This is important because as the song of life moves along you have to make room for new notes to appear and guide the rhythm where it is supposed to go.  Creation, destruction, perseverance only happen in a balance with the music of your life.

    Natures Examples Observed

Look at the moon and how it works in a complete cycle, sometimes pulling the tides in and others pulling them out. This natural rhythm can be observed, documented, predicted and used to understand how our oceans work.  You can know what time low or high tide will occur on any date in the future with a simple observation and calculation.  The seasons work the same way, we know when the spring and fall equinox will occur as well as the summer and winter solstice.  If the rhythm of the seasons in our lives that allows us the chance to see how it works in other areas of our lives.

Farmers have been able to use the cycles of nature to predict behavior for many generations.  This information is used to decide when to plant or harvest crops.  Plants and trees develop and decompose based on the season. Animals also adjust to the rhythm of life as some migrate to warmer areas during winter.  All of this shows that you can adjust to the season which is upon you and thrive, just by being aware of what is happening to you.

    The Pendulum

We see this come true in all aspects of our lives, from politics to business. Whenever something swings one way, right or left, it must eventually swing back the other way. Economies are continually moving this way as people go from stretches of spending confidence to periods of thrift, fear and holding back.  Each swing brings an experience for people in all economic brackets.  It makes sense then to not let any of the cycles we encounter in life make us too high or too low.  Maintaining an even keel through all the swings of the pendulum seems to be the healthiest mindset we can have.

By not letting the extremes of the pendulum effect you in a wild way, you are able to achieve peace and pursue your dreams. Calmness has a majesty about it which allows cool heads to prevail in difficult circumstances.  Learning to dance through the difficult times allows you insight, and wisdom about preparing when the good times come back again.  We can benefit from this philosophy in any area of our lives. Look for the patterns of it where you are so that you can predict where you are going.

“In the universe, in life, and in all things there is a season. A time for all things.”

Did The Grinch Have It Right?

GrinchBookSS01I think that the Grinch might have had it right. If we took away the ribbons, tags, packages, boxes or bags, I don’t think that Christmas would actually come at all.

We would not find people singing in a circle being positive and loving. There would be chaos.   People would be in fear for the economy, (by the way, holiday buying should not be an indicator of the health of the economy), angry about their loss of new gadgets, and I think it might lead to a national emergency. The media would have a field day, proclaiming the end of the world or blaming it all on a terrorist plot to end the United States as we know it.

When I was a kid I always felt bad for the Who’s down in Whoville, but now I am not so sure that I was rooting for the wrong side. The Grinch might have had the right idea all the time.

“Then the Grinch thought of something he hadn’t before! What if Christmas, he thought, doesn’t come from a store. What if Christmas…perhaps…means a little bit more!”

It is my observation that this simply isn’t true in our society. I would love to believe that we ,as a people, are more capable of love than we are of being greedy and judgmental, but the facts do not favor this.

angry chrixtmansPeople get depressed, angry and upset far more than they give, love and understand others. If you want to be brave and spend some time in any retail store this year you will find far more faces of worry, anger and crying. There are a lot of reasons people feel badly.  If people can’t buy all of the things that they feel they want to, they feel bad. If they don’t get enough useless stuff, they feel bad. Here is what we should be happy about this time of year.

    1. You are healthy
    2. You are loved
    3. You are able to grow and work toward goals
    4. Your loved ones are  healthy and happy
    5. We are relatively free to live our lives
    6. Each new day is filled with possibility and promise, that it is up to you to fulfill.

None of these things costs a cent  and all people can be happy about them. Wrap that up and put it under a tree this year. I think that if we removed the stores from Christmas, people would protest in the street.

Christmas Doesn’t Come From A Store

In the end, the feeling surrounding Christmas can not be bought, and it is simply valuing people over material things. If that were popular more people would have a merrier Christmas.

No matter how much money we spend, or material things we receive, it will

    Magic in your Heart
    Magic in your Heart

not make you a better person in any way. Giving should be our motto, accepting the love from others, and being grateful for all that we have in our lives will make the Christmas Season special.  Give the gift of your time, your humor, your intellect or your kindness to someone and that will build a cheer that will last all year long.

So even if I decide to root for the Grinch and take away Christmas, I know that should not really happen because somewhere, there is a child who feels the magic that this season can bring. Christmas is for children and I wish there was a way to keep the magic and get rid of the commercialism. That would truly be a Christmas miracle.  Neither the Grinch or myself could be upset about that.

Seasons In The Piano Man Sun

    Nostalgic Music Month Day 20

    Billy Joel by Jon Hilton

Almost all of the people who grew up during the 70’s and 80’s had their life touched by the music of Billy Joel. His music was popular for decades and the songs have become iconic to me. It was January 30, 1987. A friend of a friend was going to see Billy Joel in Portland, Maine. We were going to meet them after the concert, I had no intention of going. Arriving early, on a snowy, cold Maine night, we decided to duck into the Cumberland County Civic Center to get warm. We stepped through the door, there was nobody there. Only an opening into the concert and Billy Joel singing.  Sometimes opportunities are just handed to you and that day I got to see Billy Joel for free. It was a great day.

    1. Scenes from an Italian Restaurant– Life is nothing but a series of choices made. The choices come in all forms, easy, hard, good, bad, short-term or lifelong. Relationship choices are some of the most important we make because it is the relationship choices that really define the direction that our soul is going to go. Your needs and those of another dictate the activities and priorities of the life that you live.  In this song, it is a simple choice between a bottle of red or a bottle of white. When I see young people who are in love, I always think about Brenda and Eddie and wish them good luck.  A bottle of white, a bottle of red. Perhaps a bottle of rose instead. We’ll get a table near the street. In our old familiar place. You and I, face to face.
    2. The Stranger-I believe we all have many sides and people wear masks depending on which side they want to reveal on that day. This song describes the fact that people really keep their true self to themselves. Is it because we lack a faith that our true identities will be accepted by others. I once heard that 99% of what we really think about life and people is hidden kept to ourselves and nobody knows except for us. We all fall in love but we disregard the danger……. There is always a danger in falling in love because you are risking a rejection, and romantic love brings with it attached emotions like jealousy and fear of losing what you have that makes people behave in strange ways like possessivness and other crazy stuff. All good things come with an equal danger of bad, communication and honesty is the cure.  You may never understand How the stranger is inspired, But he isn’t always evil. And he is not always wrong. Though you drown in good intentions. You will never quench the fire. You’ll give in to your desire. When the stranger comes along.
    3. Just the Way You Are– All of the positive memories I have about relationships have stemmed from the feeling that both parties are accepted just as they are. There is no desire to change them or make someone into something that they are not.  It seems that the older you get all the people you meet have spent their lives building a relatonship coat. This coat contains all of the things they ideally want and don’t want in a relationship partner. So they are continually looking for someone who can wear that relationship coat and be that ideal person. This puts expectations on people and causes ultimate disappointment.  I know I don’t have any desire to wear someone else’s relationship coat because it would dim who I am. that person should be enough. What relationship coat have you built?  I said I love you and that’s forever. And this I promise from the heart. I could not love you any better. I love you just the way you are.
    4. You May be Right-When it comes to being wrong, I have a particular friend who is a master at it. One of his favorite pasttimes is arguing with people over silly things. In most cases, he is just arguing for the sake of arguing. I contend that he can’t help it because of his family and upbringing. He will argue about things with questionable factual information but always with conviction. I don’t pretend to understand why he gets all worked up about things you can’t control.  All I know is that the best use of Google is to fact check his sources and make sure that all arguments are coming from a factual location.  This song really reminds me of him.  You may be right. I may be crazy. But it just may be a lunatic you’re looking for. Turn out the light. Don’t try to save me. You may be wrong for all I know. You may be right. You may be wrong but you may be right.
    5. Vienna– Our lives are driven by dreams. Life is a constant jouney to try to build dreams and to work to achieve them. In that journey there is going to be fear and doubt to overcome. Nothing worthwhile comes without a cost. We should all create dreams of accomplishment and achievement no matter how old we are. These are the things that give life meaning and allow us to move forward with passion and adventure. There are going to be doubts, get out of your own head and focus on the goal.  This will make you create a life that is certainly worth living.  In that pursuit it is important to enjoy the journey, because it is in the journey that all the memories are created and the interesting story is written.  But you know that when the truth is told. That you can get what you want or you get old. You’re gonna kick off before you even. Get halfway through. When will you realize, Vienna waits for you.

    Terry Jacks by Mike Martin

The 1973-74 school year was the last time that Jon Hilton and I were in the same class. Mrs. Thornquist, our 2nd-grade teacher, was an absolute sweetheart. The highlight of the week was always a visit from her husband Bill, who like his wife, was very much respected in the small remote village of Greenville, Maine.

She was so sweet that she tolerated way too much of our misbehaviors, and I am not saying that Jon and I took advantage of her kindness, but we did earn what I call the “Hilton Rule”-a new policy in the Greenville School System that Jon and I were not to be in the same class ever again.

The school did modify the “Hilton Rule” policy once for a short time. In 5th grade, circumstances dedicated that I move classroom and was in Hilton’s class for what amounted to two days. The duration of the stay was brief because the 5th-grade teacher was a pervert. He made a pass at

    Season in the Sun

me and I stopped short of punching him in the nose. I went directly to the VP office Mr. Keenan, asked and was granted a transfer back to Mr. Pooler’s room.

When I hear Seasons in the Sun , an English-language adaptation of the song Le Moribond by Belgian singer-songwriter Jacques Brel- a song that became a worldwide hit in 1974 for Terry Jacks-a Canadian singer, songwriter, record producer, and environmentalist, I immediately think of the bus ride from my house on MacAfee Street to Greenville Elementary School anticipating another great day in Mrs. Thronquist’s class.

The song was originally intended for the Beach Boys, with Jacks serving as producer for the recording; however, after the group decided not to release it, Jacks recorded it himself in late 1973 on his own record label, Goldfish

A different season in the sun

Records. The song became the largest-selling international single by a Canadian artist at that time, eventually selling 14 million copies worldwide.

Terry Jacks “Seasons In The Sun” 2014

Goodbye to you my trusted friend
We’ve known each other since we were nine or ten
Together we’ve climbed hills and trees
    Learned of love and ABC’s
Skinned our hearts and skinned our knees
Goodbye my friend it’s hard to die
When all the birds are singing in the sky
Now that spring is in the air
    Pretty girls are everywhere
Think of me and I’ll be there

We had joy, we had fun
we had seasons in the sun
But the hills that we climbed
Were just seasons out of time

Goodbye Papa please pray for me
I was the black sheep of the family
You tried to teach me right from wrong
Too much wine and too much song
    Wonder how I got along
Goodbye Papa it’s hard to die
When all the birds are singing in the sky
Now that the spring is in the air
    Little children everywhere
    When you…

And, when riding a school bus in Greenville, Maine back in the mid 70’s, you listened to the girls sing Season In the Sun by Terry Jacks, over and over again. I admit they sounded pretty good, but of course, I was more interested in playing kickball and making slime.

Please, have a great day, and if you have any questions, drop us a line and please partake in #OctoberNostalgicMusicMonth and while you are at it take a trip to Greenville, Maine-I understand the foliage is majestic this time of year! #visitGreenville

    Value of Appreciation

It should come as no surprise that feeling appreciated in any situation is important to people. Appreciation allows a person to feel valued in a situation and that their presence and contribution matter to the overall experience of things. This is true in all areas of life and should be a part of your conscious focus. Having our positive points recognized and valued by someone else is the essence of being a well-functioning human being.  Appreciation also gives people the confidence to perform at a higher level in all things they undertake.  Look for ways to show appreciation to all those in All areas of life today.

    Appreciate Those You Work With

It is not difficult to be appreciative.  Look for those who are doing all the things they should be doing at a high level and then tell them how awesome they are doing there.  Criticism is easily dispersed when a crisis arises or to just make yourself feel better.  All people should be held accountable for their actions, and let the chips fall where they may for deeds of dishonesty or deceit. These things take care of themselves.

Far more common are people performing at a high level for a company and not being recognized for it.  In fact, people see the good work, know it is there, but nothing is ever said until something goes wrong.  Then criticism and reactions are the norms. This destroys morale and any positive momentum a workplace has accumulated is gone. Taking the time to appreciate those who are working for you or your company, will pay you back in loyalty and a lack of turnover in staff.

    Appreciate those in your life

There are people in your life that provide a positive spin on things and are there for you when you need them.  Each person brings a special presence to your life and you should always take the time to tell them that you appreciate them and all they contribute to your life.  It doesn’t take a lot of effort to do this and if you mean it, all involved should feel better about all of your interactions.  Everybody wants to be appreciated and know that they are important to the fabric of your life.

How many relationships fail because there is little to no appreciation for the things that couples do for each other every day?  I would bet quite a few.  Tell those who are doing something for you that you appreciate them as often as you think of it.  Be specific in the praise and accept the appreciation you get in return.  All of your relationships hopefully will grow in a positive direction that you show appreciation for.  Who wouldn’t want to be reminded of their good qualities on a consistent basis?  Don’t make them wait, appreciate!!

    Appreciate Yourself

Each of us needs to take a moment and just appreciate all the things we do well and what our “good” qualities are.  Too often people spend way too much time focusing on their shortcomings and faults.  Who knows your faults better than you? Nobody.  That is the problem because we are so used to having a negative inner dialogue about our problems that we forget to appreciate any of the things we do well or the talent we contain within.

Take time today and focus on enjoying all of the positive qualities that you possess. Each of these skills is there shining for the world to see. Your sense of humor, your skill with people, your ability to sing in the shower.  All of these things are there for you to enjoy and celebrate.  Appreciate all the things that many take for granted.  The gift of vision, hearing, sound, thought all are amazing gifts and should be appreciated.  When you look at yourself this way there is a happier soul inside of you.

Appreciation is the challenge today, appreciate all of the people in your life, at work, at home, and in the mirror.  They all deserve it and it will make the world a much happier place.

“Make it a habit to tell people thank you. To express your appreciation, sincerely and without the expectation of anything in return. Truly appreciate those around you, and you’ll soon find many others around you. Truly appreciate life, and you’ll find that you have more of it.”- Ralph Marston

“As we express our gratitude, we must never forget that the highest appreciation is not to utter words, but to live by them.”- John F. Kennedy

    Living on a Prayer Monday

    Nostalgic Music Month Day 16

    Monday- by Jon Hilton

It is a Monday morning and I feel like most people do on this day. The angst of another week of responsibility and the end of any free time for five more days.  This is the day most people move from doing what you want to do into doing what you have to do.  All of my life, this day has a bittersweet feeling to it. I am grateful to have things to do, but I am a free bird that likes the ability to do whatever I want.  In honor of this strange day that makes people love coffee and long for a vacation, today I am choosing Monday Songs as my musical choice today. Remember that you always have a choice, regardless of your current circumstances, to make the day what you want.

    1. Monday, Monday– Mammas and the Papas- Monday is the worst day of the week. You can’t trust that day because as I remember from my school days, people still expect you to do all of your homework, even if you had a fantastic weekend. Nothing much has changed.  Apparently, the Mammas and the Pappas felt the same way because whenever Monday comes you can find them crying on the ground. I don’t hate Mondays that badly so that is a positive. Oh Monday mornin´ you gave me no warnin´ of what was to be. Oh Monday, Monday, how could you leave and not take me.
    2. I Don’t Like Mondays– The Boomtown Rats- It was sometime in 1983 I first heard this song. And I concurred completely that I did not like Mondays. I wanted to shoot the whole day down. I enjoyed high school because it had the two things I was passionate about, girls and sports. The learning part was far in the background for me. I did it because that allowed me to stay in a place with girls and sports. Oh, oh, oh and the silicon chip inside her head. Gets switched to overload. And nobody’s gonna go to school today. She’s going to make them stay at home.
    3. Manic Monday- The Bangles- I think we all have selected amnesia. We seem to forget that the week is going to be full of many of the things that it was full of last week and the week before. Yet, people still seem surprised that work is going to happen. School is going to happen. Just like it did last week. That leads to another Manic Monday.  I had to include the Bangles because I am a child of the 1980’s.  And it is another Manic Monday. Have to catch an early train. Got to be to work by nine. And if I had an air-o-plane, I still couldn’t make it on time.
    4. Rainy Days and Mondays-The Carpenters- Often in adult life, I feel like I am in the movie Tommy Boy whenever I hear a song by the Carpenters. Deep down, I love it but I would never let anyone else know that. This song does explain how many people see Monday and let it get them down. We have all had the blues at some point, and this song allows you to sing about it if you want to feel better.  Secretly we all love The Carpenters and that is ok on Monday or any other day of the week. Talkin’ to myself and feelin’ old. Sometimes I’d like to quit. Nothin’ ever seems to fit. Hangin’ around, Nothin’ to do but frown. Rainy days and Mondays always get me down.
    5. Come Monday– Jimmy Buffett- I am sure that Jimmy Buffett will have his own day, but when it comes to Monday songs this is one of my favorites. Unlike the others, it is about looking forward to Monday. It reminds me of all the times that I have been away from the one I love and looking forward to seeing them again. Who hasn’t felt this way? I just can’t wait to see you again.  Monday is a day, just like any other that provides an opportunity to make choices. Whether those choices are positive or negative is up to you.   Come Monday It’ll be all right. Come Monday I’ll be holding you tight. I spent four lonely days in a brown L.A. haze, And I just want you back by my side.

    Bon Jovi  by Mike Martin

Bon Jovi, a self-titled debut studio album by the American rock band Bon Jovi, was released on January 21, 1984. The album produced one hit, Runaway, the other songs from the album were rarely performed live after the release of Slippery When Wet in 1986.

I saw Bon Jovi open for the California metal band Ratt at the San Diego Sports Arena on New Year’s Eve 1985. Ratt was a popular headlining band at the time, but we all left thinking that, Bon Jovi, put on the more dynamic performance and that they had a great future.

    Bon Jovi Concert

We were right. Thus far, Bon Jovi has released 13 studio albums, has sold more than 130 million records, and performed more than 2,700 concerts in over 50 countries for more than 34 million fans.

There is some confusion about Bon Jovi’s hit song from Slippery When WetYou Give Love a Bad Name. This is a very different song and should never be confused with a much different song from Bon Jovi self-titled album Bon Jovi –Shot Through The Heart

I like listening to Bon Jovi, but do not listen to them often, but after this Monday morning, I want my family to know that we are all just Livin’ On A Prayer

Take my hand, we’ll make it I swear
    Woah, livin’ on a prayer

And, FYI-it’s a day to celebrate because

    Woah, we’re half way there
    Woah, livin’ on a prayer

Please, have a great day, and if you have any questions, drop us a line and please partake in #OctoberNostalgicMusicMonth and while you are at it take a trip to Greenville, Maine-I understand the foliage is majestic this time of year! #visitGreenville

    Choosing Positive over Negative

positive thinking One of the peculiar aspects of this human experience is that the content of our thoughts dictates how we feel about our experiences.  When you focus thoughts on the positive then your feelings are generally positive and if negative things are in your thoughts when you feel anxiety, fear, other negative things. The thoughts we have about ourselves and others determine how happy we are in this moment, how fulfilling our relationships are and how we affect all those we come in contact with.

What you are thinking is caused by our environment. If something or someone in your life does something that moves you to the negative. Then you have a simple choice to make, deal with it honestly and then put it in the past.  Dwelling on the negative thoughts such as jealousy, envy, fear, or judgment will inject your life with anxiety. Whereas focusing on positive thoughts of acceptance, kindness, understanding and love the result will be emotions and feelings that are supportive and positive. Our thoughts are the direct cause of our emotional state. We are in control of the thoughts we entertain at any moment, completely and without question. Remembering this can be difficult, but you can get a more positive feeling by letting the negative move out of your life.

    The Opposite is Always Available

So how do you control the thoughts that you pay attention to? For all of the emotions we experience, they are all brought on by the series of thoughts we are focusing our attention on. If you are constantly degrading positive thinking yourself and your abilities, it isn’t any wonder that you are depressed about your prospects and potential? It may be a subconscious choice, but you are choosing the thoughts that you are identifying with. The opposite thought and corresponding actions and emotions are always available to you. That is the power you always have available.

Think about the things that make a smile come to your face, and a smile will come. The mind has the ability to provide all that we need to feel happy, successful and complete. Or it can make you feel depressed, defeated and hopeless, there is only one person who decides which reality you are experiencing. You and your choice of thought. All directions are available in the carnival of life and you are the artist that chooses the colors that represent your interest and even the effect you have on your life and the lives of others.

    Proactive Thought

Since our thoughts are such a big part of our lives, it would seem that we would guard them, protect positive thinking them and be proactive about the ones you pay attention to. It can be easy to let others choose them for you in life. The media, our friends, our families or those we meet in passing can choose what is desirable to us. If you don’t watch your thoughts someone else will be dictating how you feel about yourself and the talent that you possess.

We all have talents of one sort or another and they provide something the world has never seen or considered. We each create a unique portrait for the world, even though society is constantly trying to make us all the same. You were not born to be small and the same, so don’t think small. You were born to live your life in your own unique way, bring your talent to the table and let others see it. The biggest limiting factor you will face is the critic in your own head that causes you to focus on negative thoughts of yours and others.  If you choose to listen you will limit your experience and your consciousness. To expand these things and grow as a person, simply takes a change of focus.

The benefit of having a negative thought and emotional experience is that you can get a really clear picture of what you don’t want in your life, which will lead you to what you do want.  Become adept at recognizing the thoughts that put you in a negative situation and which thoughts will bring you out of it. All of this is a result of paying attention to what you think. I choose the positive over the negative.

“Once you replace negative thoughts with positive ones, you’ll start having positive results.”-  Willie Nelson

    Damariscotta Lions 1982

    Sports As It Should Be

It is said that as we remember the events of our lives, what we really remember is only bits and pieces of the entire picture.  Our memories are colored by our own prejudices and experience, we basically remember what we want to remember, and it is not always the most accurate retelling of events.  I try to keep this in mind,  as I remember the summer of 1982 and playing Babe Ruth Baseball for the Damariscotta Lions.  It was one of the most purely fun events I ever participated in.

    Damariscotta Lions 1982
Damariscotta Lions 1982: left to right: front: Tom Wright, Jason Cray, Brian Farrin, Mike Genthner, Chris Perry, and Gordon Fletcher. Back: Coach Tom Burnham, Eric Leeman, Bruce Farrin, Jon Hilton, David Hanna, Shane Creamer and Coach Dana Bond

In the summer of 1982 I had just finished my freshman year in high school, and was I think pretty typical for that time.  When I look at all of the sports specialization that goes on today, and the over parenting and over coaching of kids, it is with deep appreciation I look back on the experience of being a part of this team.  We had two coaches, who at the time were in their 20’s, Tom Burnham and Dana Bond clearly had a love of the game and wanted to teach the game of baseball.  I don’t remember many specifics about the game.  I know I was allowed to play most positions on the field at some point, during the season, playing the bulk of my time at second base, but also playing third, first, catching and all the outfield positions.

I remember the focus was on winning and having fun.  That is what I remember.  Perhaps that was the main focus or perhaps because we won all our games it was fun.  Who knows which, but I know that I couldn’t have looked more forward to playing.  Double header against Wiscassett? No problem.  Play two or three position get eight to ten at bats and win two games.  Sounds like a great day for me.

Trying to remember specific things is difficult at this time.  They don’t really matter now, only the complete mosaic counts.  I think that many people on that team have positive memories of the experience.   There was no complaining by the players or the parents about positions or playing time.  In fact I can’t recall any negative experience at all during that season.  All of the parents supported every kid and since we usually had nine and some times eight, we still managed to win.  I remember we won one game with only eight active players after one of our guys got ejected for throwing his bat.  All I can say is he didn’t mean to.  I ended that game playing center-left field.

It may be impossible for sports today to ever provide that type of experience.  You would have to have a group of individuals who were not under any pressure other than to do your best, try to win and have fun doing it.  That was the recipe that provided me with this wonderful experience I was fortunate to have when I was 15.

And it was not just me that remembers this team in this way.  In the past year I have had conversations with three of my teammates from the Damariscotta Lions and each mentioned this team and how much fun they had.  Yes my memory may not be what it used to, but four people who remember an experience as fun, awesome and great, have to be remembering it correctly.

Thank you to Dana Bond and Tom Burnham for dedicating their time and love of the game to all of us.
