You Certainly are Lucky
by Jonathan Hilton
I was driving to work today and for a moment I started feeling sorry for myself, I was looking at the things that I don’t have and focusing on how happy I would be if only I had a few more possessions.
Then suddenly, like being woken from a dream I noticed all that was happening around me. This morning the sun was shining brightly, and I couldn’t help but notice how blue that sky was and how white the clouds were as they passing over head. It is simple moments like this that can make you really take stock of what is important in your life. It would be nice to have every material thing I could imagine, but would that bring happiness? Would that make this day all that much better?
Well maybe for the short-term but in the long-term it wouldn’t because life isn’t about stuff, it’s about people. Whenever I get feeling sorry for myself I quickly can stop that train by just starting to look honestly at the things I am grateful for in my life, and it usually doesn’t take too long to realize that I was born lucky.
Enjoy People in Your Life
People often overlook the contributions of other people in their lives, or at the very least they neglect to let them know how much they mean to them on a daily basis.
I am so very grateful for everyone I come in contact with every day because each person is a unique experience and they do teach me something. Perhaps it is about giving, that lesson I learn whenever I spend time with my parents.
Or maybe it is a lesson on patience that I am constantly being taught as I move through my daily life. Interactions of this kind are tremendous growth opportunities that I only need to reflect on to appreciate and benefit from. I was definitely born lucky when it comes to having met people who are full of lessons to teach, whether they know it or not.
Strangers Kindness Can Make Your Day
There are people who I see that have no idea how just being kind to me, makes my entire day and in turn makes it easier for me to show kindness to others. The majority of the people who you see each and every day are good people, all you have to do is talk to them to find this out. There are people who I see through work who may not know the positive impact they have on those around them. As their friendly, generous gestures aren’t ignored by me, I am not sure there is an appropriate manner of response, thank you seems so inadequate. There is so much to be grateful for, I definitely was born lucky.
I Live in A Paradise
I am very fortunate to live in one of the most beautiful places at the world, I wonder how many people take a second each day and appreciate that.
It seems so contradictory to the text it, email it, Facebook it, Tweet it world we live in. I wonder if thirty years from now there will be any beauty in nature to appreciate, but even more poignant will there be anybody left who would notice.
Hopefully they will remember they are one lucky bastard to live in such a naturally beautiful place and have seen it at its best.
Appreciate what YOU have
Everyone should take a bit of time to be sincerely grateful for all that they have. I believe that one reason that people suffer so much is that they continually look for things to be miserable about instead of looking for something awesome in your life.
Rare is the life that is totally miserable and void of any good. If you know of someone who fits that description, perhaps it is time for you to be the good thing in their life that they can be thankful and grateful for. You were born lucky and sharing your good fortune is a duty, so get to it.
Give Back When You Can
I hope that anyone who reads this, takes it for what it is, an urging to take an honest look at your life and be thankful for the good things and positive people who you come in contact with every day. You don’t have to be rich to be happy. Material possessions do not define your character.
In the end, when you die and move on from this place, nobody is going to say, “Wow, look at all their stuff! What an incredible person.” The score will be kept on a much different scoreboard, how you lived your life will be far more important to all of those who knew you.
If you can give back even just a little more than you take from this life, you will know that you are the best kind of person, and the world will know you were certainly born lucky!
