Winter

Word of the Day

Winter -the coldest season of the year

winterLiving in Maine my entire life, winter has been a major part of life. Every year there is the challenge that the weather throws at you. It interrupts your schedule, makes you plan, forces you to endure and it also causes you to grow and it develops a toughness inside of you because if you can survive this challenge so easily, other challenges will be just as easy to conquer.  Every year, like it or not, winter comes, the days get short, the weather gets cold and the challenge begins to not only survive the season but to thrive in it.  Sometimes it is difficult to not complain about the cold temperatures and the storms. But complaining doesn’t change anything, each day is going to be what you make it.  Add the positive aspects of winter to your awareness today in your thoughts, words, and actions.  Winter is not an enemy, it is a proving ground.

What Matters Most

When you are 80 years old, what will matter to you the most?

4058994722_600px_Elongated_circle_80svg_xlargeLife once looked  like a straight road. A path to a predetermined end that was so simple to follow that it would be like playing a board game.

Put your marker at the start, take your turn, roll the dice and see if you can get to the finish before anybody else with more stuff than you need.  Life is not playing out that way for me, does it for anybody?

I know enough to know, that I do not know that I don’t know anything about what life might be like in a year from now, let alone in thirty-one years from now.

Life is Fair

fair lifeIf I heard it once, I have heard it a thousand times. Life is just not fair.  I have heard it from family members, friends, politicians and even from myself on more than one occasion.  I am here to tell you today that this statement is the biggest false cliché, defeatist statements that a person can listen to or accept.  Life is very fair and here is why.

Perspectives of Pain and Suffering

painful experiencesWhen a person says, life isn’t fair, they don’t really mean it. What they mean is, I am going through something that is less than pleasant, annoying, or downright heart wrenching, and I prefer it when others experience this stuff, not me.

Space

Word of the Day

Space  -a continuous area or expanse that is free, available, or unoccupied.

One of the words that can be difficult to understand and find in our lives is space. This is the area in which someone has room to grow and develop their skills and ideas and understand the talents they possess and the things they understand.  It is important to find our own personal space and to allow for those we care about to have theirs as well.  However many times people seem to behave like steamrollers, plowing through other people’s boundaries and clear needs in order to reassure ourselves.  Become aware of the space that you need and the space you can provide for others today in your thoughts, words, and actions today.

The Original Me

Who do you sometimes compare yourself to?

“He who trims himself to suit everyone will soon whittle himself away.”
– Raymond Hull

sseuss

When I first saw this question I spent a few moments thinking of who I actually compare myself to. It was very difficult because I don’t really compare myself to anyone. Not because I don’t want to grow and aspire to the positive traits of others, but rather I like who I am quite a bit and can’t see me being anyone else.

Question

Word of the Day

Question-  a sentence worded or expressed so as to elicit information.

questionOne of the greatest powers we have in our mind is to create questions our minds have no choice but to answer. Most people don’t realize the power this gives them because the asking yourself the right questions will lead you to the answers that will enhance or limit your life. So it is important you learn to ask the right questions to receive the results you want to see in your life.  This takes practice and an awareness of the questions you are already asking yourself each and every day.  Evaluate if they are questions that are helpful or harmful and make changes accordingly. Your mind will help you find the answers and it all starts with being conscious of your words, thoughts, and actions when it comes to the questions you ask yourself and how you ask them.

Action Time

wd oooHow many great ideas are destroyed before they have a chance to take root? How many are discarded by the neglect of time? Due to fear of failure or a lack of self-confidence? The time to wait is over and the time for action is here.  Taking action is THE ingredient that turns the perfect combination of raw materials into a masterpiece.  A life is defined by the actions one takes or in many cases the inaction.

I wanted to share a few of the things I have learned about grasping your life by the throat through action.  none of them are very difficult to do but they can be daunting. I continually have to remind myself about these things.

My Curriculum

If you had to teach something, what would you teach?

564232_438576869504774_929540821_nPresented with the opportunity to teach anything I wanted, and assuming that anyone wanted to learn, there is no doubt that I would try to teach a few of the things I have learned from life that I think are important.

There were many important things that I never really considered early on in life, which has proven to be invaluable and nearly vital knowledge today.

These lessons may not be mind blowing but I think they are important for you to be all that you want to be in life.  Whether you think they have a place in your life or not is up to you.

No News. Is Good News!

stop watching the news
Give it a shot, stop watching. What do you have to lose but fear?

I am tremendously grateful for a conscious decision I made  about four years ago to stop watching the national news and leaving the fear mongering and celebrity worship behind.

I don’t seem to be missing out on anything positive and am just as informed as I always have been, but the real benefit is the fact that I have not been subject to the consistent stream of negativity that comes from any of the national news outlets.  I think  this enables me to be happier on a daily basis.

Attitude

Word of the Day

Attitude-a settled way of thinking or feeling about someone or something, typically one that is reflected in a person’s behavior.

attitudeAttitude is everything because it is a result of the way we think and feel about everything. If you are not conscious of your attitude and why you think or feel a certain way about something, then you are at the mercy of that thought pattern. Many of our damaging issues, resulting from low self-esteem stem from our attitude about ourselves and perceptions about our abilities and values.  Today make a pact with yourself to be conscious of your attitude today and the resulting experience that comes from it.  Look at your thoughts, words, and actions and see how they reflect your attitude toward life, other people and most importantly yourself.

Core Beliefs

BeliefMinds work overtime, sometimes and I wrote this list originally several years ago but continually update my core beliefs as new evidence and experience prove old ideas in need of tweaking or total replacement. So here are the current version of MY CORE BELIEFS. Presented in no particular order, here are a few of the things that I hold as truths for my life.

We Are All Connected

Call it God, the Universe, or whatever your religion dictates, but to me, we are all connected through divine order.  All people contain the same abilities for great love, and equal power to commit evil.  That is just a part of this crazy game called life.

Weakness Watch

Self Evaluation Searching for Biggest Weakness

helen keller overcome
Do Not Be Afraid To Try To Be A Better Person!

How often do you look at yourself and truly evaluate the greatest weakness? The honesty and emotions that are raised by this sort of inquiry are not dismissed lightly. I recently searched my life to identify my biggest weakness.

Now there are probably many that people who know me would think of, and some who don’t know me could come up with a lot more.  I never claimed to be perfect, but when it comes down to my absolute biggest weakness, it is the fact that I have cared way too much about what other people thought about me.

Imagine

Word of the Day

Imagine-Form a mental image or concept of.

Children, when left to their own devices are able to imagine deeply, fully and amazingly. Their power to look at the world and create a mental image that only exists in their mind is amazing.  Unfortunately, as we grow up, we develop too much sense and forget how to imagine anything outside of our daily reality.  It is little wonder that so many people are unhappy and feel desperate about life and their existence in it. Today I am asking you to look at what you imagine on a daily basis.  Do you see what your life might be? Do you see places that you would like to go?  Treasures you want to amass? Love you want to experience?  Imagination is a powerful tool in helping all people create great things.  Be conscious of your imagination or lack thereof today.  In your thoughts, words, and actions today have an awareness of what is real and what you imagine.

Wish I Knew

What do you wish you spent more time doing Ten years ago?

Five years ago, life was very different.
Five years ago, life was very different.

Ten years bring many changes to life, I have changed jobs a few times, moved to new locations, and changed my entire outlook on life.

Looking back,  it is kind of amazing that so many experiences came to me in the short period of a few years.

Now, like most people looking through the lens of experience, there are many things I wish that I had been doing earlier in my life. But all is a process and you have to follow them step by step. What seems like wasted time is really time to learn.  A few of these lessons follow.

Struggle

Word of the Day

Struggle- make forceful or violent efforts to get free of restraint or constriction.

Life will never be easy all the time. If it was people would never develop the skills they need to provide their skill to the world.  We will struggle in all facets of our lives both personally and professionally.  It is human nature to want to avoid these obstacles because it would be easier without them. But easy is not always good and it is important to be thankful for the struggles we face because all of them bring with them an opportunity to become a better version of ourselves. We are always given a choice to let the struggle we face dictate the action of our lives or to let our lives dictate how we defeat the struggle.  It begins with being conscious of your struggles and the opportunity they are providing to you.  This begins with the thoughts, words, and actions you take to overcome these barriers, grow and develop.

Creating Space for Possibility

 Space

quote-Jonathan-Sacks-make-space-in-your-life-for-the-213035Change is an inevitable and vital part of life. Change is happening to everyone each day. Some of the differences are so imperceptible as to be invisible but they are there none the less. It is human nature to hold tightly to the past and the things we are comfortable with, like a child with a blanket, these ideas, and possessions present a form of comfort, even if they no longer serve us in any meaningful way.

Embrace The Unknown

face the unknown
Be grateful for What is Currently Unknown

All of us have a deep desire inside to know what is going to happen next.  Where are we going? What is the next step? What should I do now?

Sometimes it seems like it would be much easier if our lives were scripted in a book that we could read before hand, like a play.  Follow the script and you will eventually come to your happy ending and everything will be alright.  A happy ending for all situations.  That is just not the way that life works and I, for one, am grateful for it. Face the new experiences of life and bravely embrace the unknown. You really don’t have any other choice.

Time

Word of the day

Time~    the indefinite continued progress of existence and events in the past, present, and future regarded as a whole.

Life is nothing but the rolling of time and the experiences that each person collects along the way. We choose if we spend our time wisely or foolishly. Time is irrefutable, non-negotiable and inevitable.  We only get a finite amount of it and our consciousness should be spent considering the ways in which we spend this most valuable of commodities.  Evaluate your life and the people you spend time with, the thoughts you entertain and the activities you participate on a daily basis.  Are these things a valuable use of your time?  Be conscious of the things you love doing, that make you feel alive and the people who add value to your life.  Then spend more time with them doing things you value.  It all begins with a conscious awareness of time in your thoughts, words, and actions.

What is Normal?

no-normalThere is no such thing as normal.  Normal is a word that will bring a different vision to everyone’s mind, but to me each vision is biased by the experiences of the thinker.  My normal may seem ludicrous to you and what you do each day as a matter of life, may seem out of this world. The point to me is that there is no need to appoint a value of “normal” to anybody or anybody’s life.

What If?

What If?

what-ifThere are questions we ask ourselves all of our lives that can haunt us if we let them. What if that decision was wrong? What if I shouldn’t have done that? What if I had tried out for the chess team in high school? What if I said yes?

There are a million of these questions that you can consume your time with, but they don’t add up to anything in the end because the fact is whatever you are “what if-ing” about didn’t happen, will never happen and so should concern you about as much as what the weather was in Borneo in the year 1656.
